Subject: I don't care!

WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS?

"Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001? Were people from all over the world, mostly Americans, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan, across the Potomac from our nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania? Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was "desecrated" when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet? Well, I don't. I don't care at all.

I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia.

I'll care when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi tells the world he is sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling, slashed throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called "insurgents" in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.

I'll care when the American media stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution's Bill of Rights.

I'll care when Clinton-appointed judges stop ordering my government to release photos of the abuses at Abu Ghraib, which are sure to set off the Islamic extremists just as Newsweek's lies did a few weeks ago.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information, know this: I don't care.

When I see a fuzzy photo of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college hazing incident, rest assured that I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank that I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed "special" food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being "mishandled," you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts that I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled "Koran" and other times "Quran." Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and -- you guessed it -- I don't care!" -I don't care!

There is a lot of stuff happening in the sand that I couldn't give a hoot about, except one very big thing..

we have over 1700 dead, and nearly 5000 wounded.

We Americans better start careing what the world thinks of us, or the price will get more and more costly.

I agree that with all the dead and wounded that is sad. But it has nothing to do with what the world thinks of us. It has to do with us staying in the country and trying to rebuild it. The world as a whole only wants our free money. All we have done over the last 75 years is to try to buy friends. That has never worked and never will.

You forgot about the 3,000 civilians we have dead due to 9/11. I'm am very sad about our dead soldiers. But they are soldiers and knew the risks. People in office building didn't sign up and take an oath to fight for our country.

I could care less what the rest of the world thinks. I'm glad we didn't care what the rest of the world thought in 1941. No matter what we do, the world will hate us out of pure jealousy anyway. Why do they all want to emigrate here?

Can we fight them without descending to their level?

It's a question that we asked and answered in the 1940's. How about now?

The answer in the 40s was "no." Ask the folks of Dresden, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. War = killing, and there's just no way around it. War is being waged against us again. The question we need to ask and answer now is whether we want to fight, or surrender.

Good letter, Greg.

We will win this or we will lose this. In either case the decision will be made here in this country. It will not be made 'over there', wherever and whenever that happens to be. The ideology at stake here is, yes, peace and freedom, but more deeply one of an absolute truth. If one disregards that they are then one step closer to inserting 'freedom fighter' as a substitute to 'terrorist'. Why not then 'our deficient foriegn policy' or 'blood for oil' in place of 'war against terrorism'? When one does not believe in an absolute truth it is then untenable for them to believe we can be fighting for such. But we are fighting, that much is indisputable. To reconcile that, the war must be about something but it can't be about something which doesn't exist. (I give you an 'A' if you understood that sentence) Believe it or don't, we are fighting an ancient war of ideologies.

WWII for many, many reasons continues to be a fine example of what war truly is. In this current case, WWII can be summoned as an example of how such extreme ideologies were at the core and how, even after Dec 7th '41, there were many who howled in protest or continued to believe appeasement was a viable option. Yet, can anyone point to a US-initiated Bataan or any such similar travesty? Just how is it those prisoners in this current battle came to have Korans in their jail cell? These guys are suspected of extreme prejudice against the USA and the violent prosecution of the same and we respect and support their right to practice their religion. Is this a great country or what?

We haven't sunk to their level. The problem here is reminding the domestic population that we are indeed fighting a war against an extreme ideaology. This ideology of our enemy has been in effect for at least 700 years. Actually, it is much older than that but that is a stretch for many people but the history certainly supports the claim of 700 years. Like any other ideas, even bad ideas, this ideology is maturing. We are now in a time where technology diminishes borders or political barriers. It is now very easy to widely desseminate an idea, thereby influence a great many folks, however diverse they may be.

We will not prevail in this current battle unless we get everyone onboard to form an overwhelming consensus of what the true enemy looks like. Given the current deepening schism among all the people the former will not happen until further bombings and other such travesties occur. The seemingly random terrorists acts which now include Egypt, Indonesia, and Saudia Arabia have actually done much to turn the tide against the terrorists. Like any bully but especially one trapped in a corner, they are lashing out. And like any bully, their time draws nigh. We do need to stay the course though.

But it won't be the end.

Here it is 10 years later - more than twice longer to prosecute WWII - and for what? A few thousand bad guys?

Chicken**** 'leaders' and equally despicable ROEs. THEREIN lies the problem.

Ask the thirteen year-old Iraqi boy, (or Afghani, Syrian, etc.)---who watched his innocent mom and dad burn to death in a drone strike---who the terrorists are and who he plans to fight with.

We're our own worst enemy.

Sounds like a dumb lady.

So many flaws with her letter I don't even know where to start.

What a topical conversation...

In other news, last week, we landed on the moon.
Aw, come on... Some people never get tired of recruiting for extremist groups like the original author is doing for ISIS....

I care. The nation I love is supposed to be a shining light of democracy and tolerance. That's why I love it, not because it has big guns and missiles. The minute we stop caring about that we're no better than the bad guys.

Does anyone care that we killed or caused to be killed better than half a million Iraqis in our invasion? We invaded a nation that had nothing whatsoever to do with what happened on 911, which killed fewer people than our own roadways that month.

When we act like that shining light I think we're entitled to some moral outrage. When we act like thugs, not so much so.

About that I care a lot, and I really don't care to associate with those who don't.

Just don't **** your government off, else they could easily just call you, or your family, a "terrorist"

Remember they don't really have to PROVE anything, really no oversight or accountability.

The government has droned US citizens to death before, no trial, no rights, just death.

You're WAAAY more likely to be murdered by police for no reason in this country, then killed by the big bad boogie man terrorist.

^^^yeah that^^^ x 1000. Very well said.

This has really become a never-ending conflict. Terrorism is probably going to be with us for many decades to come. They are not a standing army like we fought in other wars, there won't ever be a formal end to hostilities, it just goes on.

The enemy is pretty horrible... there are some uncensored videos around the internet of some of the stuff ISIS does. I don't like to use subjective language like this very often, but I watched a few of those and I feel comfortable calling those people evil. I also am fairly comfortable in saying that every time one of our soldiers gets one of them, the world is a better place for it.

But, maybe it's time to step back a bit from that and look at this in a more practical way- something we don't have one leader in office with enough courage to do. The islamic militants cannot beat us. Let that sink in for a sec... when we fought Japan and Germany in WWII there was a darn good chance they could invade the mainland and defeat our country. Concentration camps, slavery, plunder, beyond anything we could imagine would have happened. These islamic militants do not and have not ever had the capacity to do that. 9/11 was their best shot and while it was tragic for the victims it didn't even come close to even being a pinprick against our sovereignty as a nation.

The terrorists might... more likely will be able to set off a bomb now and then, hold some people hostage, murder a handful of innocents. It will be tragic and horrible... but our own home-grown nutjobs, scumbags, and criminals do more than the terrorists ever will all the time. We fight it with our police force... but we live with it and for the most part we're just fine.

Much like our own problem with domestic criminals, terrorists are not part of a standing army. They join, they disband, they do evil and run away to fight again. Because of the nature of terrorism our army, as powerful as it may be, as well trained and brave as our soldiers might be cannot defeat them. Not in anything like the sense we beat the Axis powers of WWII. More like in the sense that we take down a network of drug dealers now and then... there will always be another one right around the corner. It never ends.

The thing is our military isn't a police force. When we beat Japan we did some horrible stuff that is still controversial today. Say what you will about it, that violence had an end to it- the end of the war. Our war on terror has no end though. Our soldiers try very very hard to only kill the bad guys and they do a very good job but it's war. It's messy, innocent people get killed. People who had nothing to do with these evil islamic militants are killed by us despite our best efforts and intentions. If it was like Japan... where we could do what is needed and end the war right away maybe we could say it's worth it. As it is now? I don't know.... and morality aside we're creating brand new militants when we do that and continuing the cycle.

We are fighting a war in which neither side is capable of winning or losing. However, people on both sides are quite capable of killing and dying and have been doing so for a decade.

The fact is we can endure terrorism. My vote is to pull our forces back home, concentrate on the mainland, and cut all this spending so we can all keep a few more tax dollars in our pocket and more importantly a few more military families can have their fathers alive and at home. The terrorists will probably strike again, and it will be horrible. However, much like crime we'll endure and heal.

No amount of effort, money, or anything else will win this war. Nothing the terrorists can do will defeat us. This is just stupid.... right or left I don't care.... continuing in this fashion is just ridiculous and it's high time to stop.
