ATC audio has tower asking for the turn and the pilot replies "Doing it now" eye witness reports airplane listing to its side. Winds 360 18 gusting 32. Possible he stalled it into the turn. Possibly pre occupied with something.

Winds were gusting to like 35 all day in JFK today but it was right down the pipe. i think they were doing that circling approach at TEB which sucks from what I hear.

TEB loves to circle. Seems like whatever the wind is, they'll be using a different approach with circle to the runway best aligned with the wind.....even if that runway has its own approach.

    I hate TEB.

Doesn't look like a lack of fuel was the problem.

Probably airspace coordination issues with the surrounding airports... it's one thing to have folks circle, it's another to flip the airport around and have to have the other nearby airports also flip for their "optimum" traffic setup out there. But that's just a guess from watching how they coordinated those flips long, long, ago... (our telecom gear was used for that...)...

Pretty much what DenverPilot said. It's all about the airspace coordination and traffic flow. TEB is nestled near EWR, JFK and LGA and the majority of private jet traffic going to the NYC area goes into TEB. So ATC has to get all that traffic in there without disrupting the flows for the big airports.

Some TEB approaches overlap with airspace required for EWRs approaches (or departures). So if the ceiling is sufficient, they will use whatever approach keeps them out of EWRs hair and circle to the runway that is better aligned with the wind.

And yes.... KTEB is notorious for the circle... Wind gusts, Steep bank angle, slow airspeed for final... it can become a dangerous situation quickly

Tight turn, increased stall speed, wind shear, sudden loss of airspeed, stall at low altitude. I have no Lear background other than knowing it's reputation, but it sure looks like it has high stall speeds with that little wing. Any Lear pilots here?

Had to be a heckuva ride if that picture isn't reversed...circling in a left turn and crashing right wing down?

It must be tough to get good reliable witnesses that know what they are talking about.

    Witness reports:

"Steve Case, an entrepreneur and co-founder of AOL who was aboard another plane at the airport waiting to take off, wrote in an Instagram post that the plane appeared to have missed a turn."

"A Carlstadt police spokesman said the jet appeared to be listing to its side before it crashed."

And then the reporting is top notch as well.

"The exact cause of the crash will not be confirmed until after the police investigation, they said."

I don't know anything about TEB, but from what you all say, they really need to reevaluate their procedures.
    You and me both. :(
Appears to be left wing down to me. I can see the right hand tip tank in the photo.

From the looks of the photo, the undercarriage appears to be visible along with the right hand tip tank. Looks like left wing down to me.
