Keyboard Shortcuts You Really Should Know

One that makes me shake my head is when folks type in the "www." and ".com" instead of typing just the root name and hitting cntl+enter which does it automatically.

I always type http:// and the full hostname -- if that involves a www or doesn't involve one. Must just be the geek in me. The problem is that a ton of sites aren't .com so it's hard for me to think to use that shortcut when it is a .com.

Well,Shift-enter is .com, Ctrl-Shift-enter is .org:) Alt-shift-enter is .net. There are a couple of others i think, but that covers the basic ones.

I don't think I ever use keyboard shortcuts. What difference does it make to anyone else? :dunno:

I know about that shortcut, but for some reason, I don't use it. I think it is because for almost a year, I was typing http://intranet. CTRL Enter wouldn't have worked for me there, and I type so damned fast that www and .com takes me about 1 second if not less to type.

Plus, it keeps you from going to the wrong site by accident. http://www.whitehouse.com used to be a porn site.

.net is 4 keystrokes. Alt-shift-enter is 3....

So it's ok for you to not use shortcuts but not us? :D ;)

It doesn't matter to me. The computer is only a tool- if it works, great. if not, use another computer/operating system/program until it does work for you.

I don't mind knowing about shortcuts though since they are convenient when not using a mouse (like when flying commercial- not much space for a mouse and the little touch-pad mouse is sometimes a PIA) and occasionally faster if I use that shortcut a lot.

Just quicker.. like.. "about to be busted doing something you shouldn't" quicker
Of course -- if you ever do feel that you're doing something you shouldn't be doing -- and you actually attempt to minimize all the windows -- that'll be the day where your computer almost crashes when you hit the key stroke and it takes like 20 painful seconds of watching it slowly chug along and try to hide windows.

Oh god, please don't copy Microsoft products. If I get some effing, talking paperclip telling me how to write anonymous email I will have to smash up my computer with an axe.

You do know the paperclip tells you how to turn him off? First thing I did...after changing the paperclip to a cat 'cuz cats are supposed to be annoying. I think animated help has been on 3 versions of office now (I forget the exact number because I turn it off quickly).

Then don't buy the "Windows ME Personal PC" for $399.99 at Sam's Club.

Excellent advice in the league with the best available. Such as you may know over the years, letters to Dear Abby and Ann Landers have convinced us that some domestic goddesses prefer performing their duties in the nude. For those inclined to this state of undress, Ann recommends wearing an apron while frying bacon.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

You proffered "Then don't buy the "Windows ME Personal PC" for $399.99 at Sam's Club" so as not to have to deal with that insidious Microsoft Help paper clip animation.

I felt that Ann's advice (while nude to wear an apron whilst frying bacon) to be of equal relativity. True, neither your advice nor Ann's addresses the best solution (Don't fry nude; turn off "Help") but, hey, I truly don't know.

I don't eat bacon.

:yesnod:

I'm the same way, except mine is using apostrophe's for plural's. :D

Amen! And I see your extra one. :D

The one that's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me is when someone claims it to be a "mute point"....grrrr...

Yup.

Check out this web site from an emeritus English professor at Washington State University. http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/ This will keep you reading about common errors in this language we took from England for quite some time. :D

I did not see it, but did anyone post the editing shortcuts yet?
ctrl Z, X, C, V for Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste
ctrl + shift + "cursor arrows" for highighting what you want to X or C

Some old-school control engineers do PLC code almost entirely with hot keys. The newer ones mostly mouse-around and only use a few hot keys.

Same on the Mac only with the Command key. These should be the first shortcuts anyone learns IMHO!

ctrl + shift + "cursor arrows" for highighting what you want to X or C

On the Mac, just shift + arrows will select text. Option-shift will select an entire word each time you press an arrow, command-shift will select an entire paragraph. I use those a LOT.
