Van Nuys is a pretty big, busy, corporate airport. I would not have necessarily expected it to have happened there, although it is in a pretty crappy neighborhood.

Yeah, its just not that easy. It sounds great on a message board, but in reality it's not.
In addition, how do you really know just how secure a particular FBO is? If they gave a reputation, sure. If not, it's a guess. If an airport lacks security, odds are good it's the entire ga area, not just one FBO.
It should also be noted, MANY of the ga airports I used to go had only 1 FBO.

For the people who suggested repositioning, even only considering DOC, a reposition is going to probably be at least $1,000 out and back. Then how do you know the place you went is "safer"?

Get a critical mass of white people spending time on the airport and the problem mostly goes away. Trying to store expensive delicate things near a ghetto is going to have failures. The other option is to gentrify the neighborhood around the airport. Of course then they will want to close the airport.:rofl:
Or hire work release inmates as security.:lol:

I don't know. I am just having a conversation. But, do you think the owners of these airplanes would choose to reposition with the benefit of forethought? Again, I'm not trying to pick a fight, just trying to think it through.

Some owners are more security minded than others. There was no way to predict that this was going to happen, or that it wouldn't happen somewhere else. And it's not an epidemic of tagging or anything.

I can't speak for Everskyward's company, but I used to work for one of the larger fractional ownership companies.

My guess would be yes, IF it was clearly known as a safety issue FBO ramp. That said, if that was the case I doubt they would be going there in the first place.

I don't know of any FBO ramps designated as a risky "do not park" area. It is likely a pretty random thing that can happen anywhere. That said, I would bet certain airports are more likely to be hit than others.

We have never moved an airplane out of vny for security purposes to the best of my knowledge. We were encouraged to use security tape at certain airports however, and it was mandatory in Mexico.

To my knowledge, the only place the owners of the airplane wouldn't let us take it was Haiti.

I am laughing at those calling Van Nuys a ghetto. Have those saying this really been there? I land there and walk a couple blocks to a diner I like to eat at. This part of Van Nuys s not a ghetto, if you want to see a real ghetto I would be happy to drop you off in one.

I haven't seen anyone call it a ghetto, but than again I haven't scoured the thread. I know I haven't referred to it as such. That said, aren't the big porn studios right near the airport?? :D:yes::D

We used to park at...???? Which was a stones throw to the Airtel. I would walk to the roach coach or to "Beeps" (still have my card). The shops along the way all had bars on the windows. Just sayin'.

You are correct, it was not called a ghetto, don't know why that's what I thought was said. It was called a crappy neighborhood. Some might call it that but I have no problem walking the streets around there, I have even walked to Beeps at night from the airport. Yes there are bars on Windows but several neighborhoods have them. Compton and Whiteman are airports I wouldn't walk at night.
 
Nobody has mentioned hiring a sniper to hide at the airport and shoot the bastards.

That was me who called it a crappy neighborhood. But many airports are in crappy neighborhoods. I would walk around there during the day but not at night, and I'm probably less careful about stuff like that than I should be.

If the hood ain't that bad tear down the fences put in picnic tables and let the place self watch with middle aged dork plane spotters and the like. Build a little kids playground(not basketball courts) on the edge of the airport. Best security is filling a place with good regular people.

Question - if someone commits a theft or vandalism at an airport like KVNY, does it become a more serious federal crime?..

This one percent BS is exactly the attitude that makes people think property crime is OK - as long as it's done to "the rich". And this attitude is rampant right now.

If you fly then, to someone, YOU are rich. By your rationale it would be justified, or at least not that big a deal, for someone to destroy your property. Let's see if you feel the same when it happens to you.

The fact that this isn't the worst thing that happened today doesn't mean it isn't bad. Christ.
