JesseWeather

Right now everything in front of the red-line is a forecast. I'm not sure that is the best way to show it visually. I'm thinking about using these hash lines instead.

Old way:
1252635731

New Way???:
1252635617

Which do you prefer? I think the hashed lines point out better that its a forecast that may vary, whereas everything before it are observations that have happened.

Decided on the hashed lines (based on input from a few others). All reports given for airports with TAFS will have the TAF portion of the graph w/ those lines.

Hi Jesse...
looks like they gave you a letter where you expected a number...
I use this several times a day. Thanks much!

Jack,

Fixed. It was caused by the forecast containing a variable wind direction. The code is supposed to handle that, and did, but then I promptly ignored the fact that it handled it on the next line :)

The notification stuff coming will be really cool. It'll probably be a week or longer but it'll be worth the wait.

By the way, Jess-

Your WX app rocks.

That is all.
You can thank Jack -- he got me started with his Excel based pressure tracking.

Coded some tonight -- progress is being made. I'll be looking for people to beta test my notification system in the near future. I really do think it'll be nice for CFI's, pilots waiting for good approach weather, or even updates while on a trip. We'll see :)

And I use JesseWeather all time time now- it's just easier since it is available on any/all of the 8 computers I may be at during the day.

My XL program has been relegated to the "interesting programming examples" file- only used as an exercise to parse METARs now.

Jesse - I love what you are doing on the weather website.
Just a little nit-picky idea. The last 2 charts don't have TAFs, but they are the same size as the previous charts. Could you display the same timeframe in them and possibly just grey out the extra? I don't know why it threw me off to see it like you have it.

Jesse, I hate to nitpick, but on your graph options for temp there are two typos:

Celsius (not Celcius)
Fahrenheit (not Farenheit)

The site, itself, is very cool. You must be having a ball with it. Cheers.

Funny, no one noticed that. It'll be fixed with my next release which will add quite a bit.

I felt like a jerk for even mentioning it, but spelling is a hot button issue for me. :D

oh i get it now. i was reading your suggestion backwards...too early in the morning for comprehension

I will be very eager to register a few airports for programmed alerts when your web page is open to the general audience. Bravo.

Here's a nutty idea: can you get "flightware" type data so as to see an airport I have filed to and arm reporting for that. Even geekier (and less reliable) a Google Lattitude applet that figures out where I am and texts me with Weather as I am rolling along.

It went to beta users this morning. I expect to roll the programmable notifications out to the public within a week. Just doing some tweaking, styling, and testing based on beta feedback.

I'm looking for another beta tester -- preferably someone with software quality assurance experience.

Both interesting ideas. I really have no idea how flightaware gets that data. Is that feed publicly accessible from the FAA or do you have to pay the big bucks for it?

Flightaware provides a commercial API that you subscribe too based on number of queries:

http://flightaware.com/commercial/flightxml/

Not sure yet how they get the data. I'll google around. I know that you can enter an email for Flight Plan confirmation to DUATs. I supposed you could register the "service" to get the alert and it would see the FP get filed.

As I save my pennies for a 396 with a partially cracked LCD and a stuck DIRECT button I am waiting for someone to glue together something that provides real time weather thru 3G. I'd be willing to trail a wire antenna that I would drag below 3000ft agl in order to pick up cellular service. I sometimes get METARs by manual polling today.

Hmm..yeah..that API is pretty freaking expensive. If I were to implement something like that I would have to bill the end-user.

I just visited the site for the first time today. I can say "That's really cool!"

Thanks Jesse! Good stuff.

John

Do you have written requirements -- or at least expectations and features?
