Is This Motorist a Jerk?

Didn't hit huh......:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Yeah, we're in an intersection and he continues into me. Like doesn't yield or stop. With impending collision I hit the breaks and so does he. Look for buzz words like collided, or hit, or damage, or wrecked, or smashed. They're not there. If I had video I'd post it but alas I'm forced to use my thumbs to type out words to describe.

Sorry I didn't do a good enough job for you but, ya know, I'm an idiot and all.

R u off your meds? Why would you get so worked up over this? It's a silly thread on a forum where rival threads ask what you're eating. This isn't nearly as important as you make it.

If you have had family hurt by someone who caused an accident, then couldn't understand why it was their fault, you would understand that it isn't funny at all. If you have a drivers license, you should know better or give up the license. Period. I also think anyone who causes accidents like that needs to lose any license they have, even be restricted from activities that don't require licensing.

Who's laughing?

And how did I cause an accident? You don't think someone running a red light might be a tad at fault?

You turned left in front of him without a protected green arrow. If it doesn't have a green arrow, you yield. If someone had to hit their brakes because of you, you are at fault. The color of their light doesn't matter, yours was yellow and an incident occurred. Yellow means stop unless it is unsafe to do so, not try to run it.

This is America, you have to be protected when you step out of the line.:nonod:

Technacally he had to hit his brakes because he had a red light. He DID hit his brakes because I was clearing an intersection. Again...I was IN the intersection and entered it with a green light.

So, should I just wait it out in the intersection or back up?

You never enter an intersection unless you have safe passage to clear the intersection.

Tucking in behind another car is dangerous.

See, that's the difference in thought between a selfish society and a compassionate society. "I am allowed to go first, therefore I will go first." Vs "Since he is sitting in an intersection to go left on a yellow light, it is more critical to the flow of traffic that he clears this intersection, and I will still have room to get in behind him before the crossing traffic comes up (besides, Incan always turn in on the next opening, I When you first saw him, you should have stood on it so he had room and time to get in behind you, that's Italian driving rules. (besides, I wont have to wait for the next light to go like he will, Imjust need a gap to make a right) and everybody keeps rolling at the best rate possible for everyone."

"Me First" thinking does not work at high population density.

And if you had followed the law and not entered the intersection until you could safely go through it, there wouldn't have been a problem. Around here people will hit you intentionally if you are past the white line at a light. Why, because if you pass the line before you are going to clear the intersection, you ran the light. Green without an arrow is left turn yield. If it isn't clear (you stop in the intersection) you didn't yield and are at fault. Pretty simple, don't pass the line until its clear.

If you had collided you would have been screwed, it would have been your fault. You should have waited, if he was running a red light that's all the more reason you should have waited, you were crossing in front of him.

I've been 'there' and they don't hit you if you're past the line. Put away the bravado. Also, I did stop in the intersection. I've said that a bunch of times.

It's not crossing in front of him if he's stopping...cause he has a red light. Also, he didn't have a turn signal on either.

Last I checked if you approach a red light you cannot roll through and make the right turn. Also, if you're IN an intersection with a red light you're expected to clear. I was in it the whole time.

You cannot sit in the intersection waiting to make a left turn on a green.
You cannot enter the intersection until the turn can be completed.
At least not in this state.

You turned left in front of oncoming traffic, makes no difference if he was intending to turn right or come straight through.

He may be a jerk, but it's your insurance and a traffic ticket for failure to yield.

Someone asked earlier, which wasn't answered so it bears repeating, who received the ticket?

Well that's a silly state. How would you ever get anywhere if you had to turn left without an arrow?

Do it all the time.
Wait behind the line on a green, all the oncoming traffic clears, then cross the line and turn left. No problem.

How many lanes on the westbound street? The car turning right must turn into the curb lane. The car turning left may turn into any unoccupied lane. So if there were two lanes, and you were turning into the left lane, he was in the wrong place. More often I see people who can't make a proper turn and you get the guy turning right into the left lane and the guy turning left into the right lane.

If you were in that position already in the intersection with a yellow light, I believe you had legal right of way. There are 'overlap' points where rights change.

But in order to be in "position" he already broke the law.
He's not supposed to start that turn until he can do so safely yielding to oncoming traffic.

Single westbound lane I'm afraid.

I don't think you can apply that "law" universally as traffic laws vary widely from state to state. I was taught in drivers ed to do exactly as Captain did. (i.e. pull into the intersection, if a gap doesn't allow you to turn left during green, then make the turn after the light turns yellow and you confirm the opposing traffic isn't blowing the light). I still do it and so does everyone else in Missouri. (Everyone else who actually has somewhere to go anyway).

Is it the law? I don't know. I do know that about twenty five years ago my BiL (turning left) got t-boned doing this and the other guy was ticketed, this because witnesses said the other guy entered the intersection on red. Had he entered on yellow my BiL would've likely been ticketed.

In missouri, you're legal to go through an intersection if your entire car is over the stop bar before the light turns red.

Timing does NOT matter..... Vehicle on the RIGHT has the right of way.. Same as in marine applications......

Captain is #ucked....

Vehicle on the right rule doesn't apply here. A left turning vehicle must yield to opposing traffic.

Everybody doing it does not make it legal, safe, or right.

I've never seen a law, or even a sane and competent driving instructor or recommendation say that a yellow light means "IT IS OK TO TURN LEFT IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC." That is patently rediculous.

As for your beloved Missouri:
3. The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard.
No exception for "the light was yellow and I was trying to get through before it turned red"

There is a law that says you need to yield to cars already in the intersection, but that doesn't negate the fact that entering the intersection as described is itself illegal.

Two wrongs don't make a right (but three lefts do).

You're failing to take into consideration ensuring the opposing traffic in going to stop before you turn. You're playing Ron (the other one) in changing the argument to suit your preference.

I don't think you can state that as fact.

It's curious that I enter the intersection on green and that's illegal and he enters on red and has right of way.

I think that's wrong. If I get ticketed so be it. I'll go to the mattresses with that.

You may want to confirm the state laws on the entire situation. Some states have a yield to oncoming traffic even if they run the red light, and as stated your state may or may not allow you to legally enter the intersection before it is clear to complete your turn.

Because you should have yielded. As soon as you pass the line at the intersection, you have committed to the turn. If you have to stop before you have completed the turn, it obviously wasn't clear and you failed to yield. It is part of federal traffic laws, supposedly states must follow the federal laws or they lose highway funding.

Also, you say you have been here, when? The crappy water and sand haulers during the gas boom have ****ed off a lot of locals. Drive Texas friendly flew out the window years ago. With the traffic cameras, all the police do is check them. If you are sitting in the intersection for any reason you can be charged with running the light, failure to yield, obstructing the flow of traffic and reckless endangerment. Even without an accident, they still mail the tickets to people who pass the line then stop. Gotta love red-light cameras.

Everyone in my years was taught:

When turning left at an intersection into on coming traffic, that you go past the white line and wait for all clear. It might take a red light to have a break in on coming traffic. As the light turns red you make your left turn.

Living in a few big cities like Sacramento most left turns have there own lanes. But in a small city such as Springfield we have very few of these. If you sit behind the white line waiting for a break in traffic you might wait for over 10 light cycles.

But you are in the wrong by following another car through the light. Only one car at a time can do this. All you had to do was look in front of the car you were following and you would have seen you would be left in the intersection.

I am amazed that people never look in front of the car they are following but stare at the bumper of the car in front of them.

Your fault for being left in the intersection after the left turn.

Tony

So, should I just wait it out in the intersection or back up?
Yield to him and then complete your turn. You'll be blocking traffic if you wait for the next green.

But I have to admit, I think Henning's solution is better, even if it is illegal in this country. Way too many drivers would yield to the oncoming vehicle and then just sit there in the intersection, blocking traffic, thinking because the light is red they have no other choice. That's a very typical Michigan boondoggle.

Yup. And the result is massive backups at lights because only one car gets through per light. That's why many drivers (myself included) will usually enter the intersection on a green behind another car (but not behind a car that is behind another one already in the intersection).

I'm not sure whether the laws on this vary from state to state, but in Michigan I've never seen it spelled out that it's illegal to do this. Yield to oncoming traffic means exactly that AFAIK - wait for the traffic to clear, behind the line or in the intersection, then go. Main caveat being to leave room for emergency vehicles legally running the light on the cross street.

Huh....

Isn't the opposing traffic on the left turning vehicles right???

Before the turn is started both vehicles are slightly to the left of each other. How does the right of way apply there?

If the left turn is not started... They WON'T hit so no need for giving right a way...:goofy:

Riddle me this...

North / South have green. East / West have red. All traffic is stopped. Car IN the intersection turning left. Who has right of way?

The car stuck in the intersection broke the law, but is obstructing traffic and should clear the roadway as soon as safely possible.
