Is it acceptable to check G5 accuracy using IPad with magnetic compass APP?

My AP and I are In the process of installing a G5 in my C23. Finding a Compass Ross painted in the tarmac of any GA airport in SE Texas is almost impossible (it is not what it used to be anymore) to check G5 accuracy.
Is my IPad with an APP acceptable using AC 43-215 procedure?

Legally no. You need at least one calibrated reference point which your Ipad app doesn't have. One option is to rent a master compass and perform the final check then.

Also at Georgetown, KGTU
Thanks both! Probably Kxco will be closer, about 100 nm, I am south Of the HOU Class B………

In the era of technology, I can’t understand why using a ground-painted compass Ross procedure used over 90 years ago is the preferred / acceptable procedure over an iPad with an APP to calibrate a solid state HSI/ GMU, Even a VFR Magnetic compass APP in an IPad will be very precise!

Its the certification of the compass rose that makes it the preferred method. Unfortunately, as the industry moves to that new technology the demand for certified compass roses has dropped considerably, which require periodic recalibration just as runway designations do to compensate for the shift in the overall magnetic field.

I you plan to use that rose to sign off a compass swing, be sure to call before you go to ensure their compass rose calibration is current.

Maybe ask the AP who is installing the G5. Following Garmin’s directives for accuracy is his responsibility.

It may be precise, but is it truly accurate? There is a difference. Trusting a mass market consumer device to calibrate an aircraft navigation device is not a good idea. In instrument calibration, it's all about traceability to a known standard.

Will call Conroe and Georgetown Tx airport managers to find out last calibration dates on their compass roses , if they know it

I'd be interested in learning what you find out. My experience with a small handful of compass roses in a fairly small area was, let's just say, "educational."

Nauga,
and his mensuration cycle

Called the CXO FBO and would not know if the compass Ross is operational nor when it was certified…..referred me to the airport mgr……..same thing…….referred me to Tower , controller said it is operational and people use it often!

Will head that way after installation …IAP depict the Rwy magnetic heading very accurately….will use it as a simple guideline first as to how close my G5 will be at before I head that way …..don’t want to head out only to the find out it is several degrees off! ( 90 nm plus ATC deviations to go around the Bravo if don’t allow me to go under it)….Will do it at least at two nearby airports with different Rwy headings ……and make adjustments if necessary!

That pretty much matches my experience, which was along the lines of "Everybody uses it, nobody knows when it was last surveyed." Turns out nobody really cares all that much, too.

Eventually I found that the compass rose was actually the least of my worries, but that's a whole 'nuther story.

Nauga,
with animal magnetism

Agree! That’s the least of my worries too thru this process - but have to comply with Garmin Guidelines - Learning a lot assisting my AP, a new experience! Nobody knew when was the last certification ….

Lots of requirements but limited approved tools or facilities to accomplish them!

FWIW: Its only become limited at the basic field mx level with the loss of all the compass roses. The move to glass cockpits 30 years ago, shifted the industry requirements toward using more master compasses and the development/use of digital compasses which make up 90+% of the work performed. Years ago, I found it much easier (and cheaper) to rent a master compass for a week than looking for and traveling to a proper compass rose.

How much is it to rent it For week? Is that the way avionics shops do it?
