Hello, i’m wondering if anyone has found a good monthly publication that covers instrument flying had a level that would be supportive of a continuing education initiative. I have been disappointed in the purchase of IFR magazine by the company who publishes flying. The articles published there under IFR are devoid of detailed knowledge. I would be interested in your thoughts thank you.

I agree, the reason I was subscribed to IFR was the in-depth approach. This "oh, here is Flying" to take its place is not what I subscribed for. I am hoping that the editorial staff will beef up the IFR light content by soliciting new content from IFR's authors. I Don't have very high hopes...

Perhaps a peer-reviewed section here on POA that mimicked the analysis of approaches, departures, and downloadable files to practice on Flight Sim or X-Plane, if we could somehow qualify and recognize the experts.

Pilots, thank you for your thoughtful replies. Perhaps others will join us and sharing their experience with other publications. It seems odd that only one publication exist that would go into details of instrument flying. Thank you all for your reply’s

Yes, I really like Opposing Bases podcast! However, I am looking for a publication that addresses the corner cases of IFR flying. Thank you for sharing.

My cfii just sent me a link to boldmethods instrument procedures course. It was pricey, but so far I'm digging it.

Disclaimer: I wrote for IFR and have been a member of the Pilot Workshops team since 2016. I was a subscriber to both before I became a participant.

With IFR magazine gone, unless someone creates a similar publication, I think the best you will see in a publication is the periodic IFR article in Flying. Some of those have been reprints of IFR articles (last year I was surprised to see one of my old articles there).

For subscription-based online "edge cases," the best bet is Pilot Workshops (which, as already mentioned, is now part of Sporty's). One of the best parts of that is, a subscription to IFR Mastery gives you access to all 178 (so far) scenarios. And I've heard comments that the best part is the roundtable discussions where we sometimes disagree with each other and sometimes (especially when there is a clear "correct" answer), use the scenario as a jumping point to a related issue or technique.

A new offering from Sporty's is IFR Focus. As it mentions, subscribing (free; and only for the emailed newsletter) includes a Practical IFR email written by Jeff Van West. Jeff is a former editor of IFR and is the driving force of the Pilot Workshops training content.

thank you for the kind response to my question. I will take a look at all of these opportunities. Best regards.

Of course, if you have specific questions, we actually have a pretty high level of expertise on this board. We have people that have worked in procedure design, coordination, industry focus groups, written policy, flew for flight inspection, written articles, know the coding of the procedure into the avionics, etc. Lots of expertise here.

..and argue a lot about some of the edge cases.

Isn't that the fun of it?
Since flying ifr, I always felt a little like an attorney-wannabe because of all the precise interpretations required in order to remain safe and legal.
And reading ifr discussions online can blow your mind, esp when you get very knowledgeable people hashing out minutiae I’d never even considered!
