I'm Out

This.

And yes, the MC is aware of the "unfriendliness" issue (in general, not just this post) and discussing the matter.

One possible option is to add to each post a "like" or "dislike" button. I'm not a facebooker and actually detest facebook so I'm not saying link it with that or anything, but have a way that registered users can give feedback on a post. Then if an a-hole makes a post that doesn't directly insult someone but is mean in a sarcastic or demeaning way, the rest of the people here can anonymously give their rating for that post only. If you post something that gets 300 dislikes and 2 likes, maybe you will think twice about doing that again. If you don't... And mods notice that the majority of your posts are not liked then maybe, just maybe, you're a long term problem poster who is deliberately trying to upset people (aka long term troll and there are a few here).

We used to have that and people whined that people weren't liking their posts, and liked other people's posts. So the MC got rid of it. We had thread ratings, and people whined that their threads weren't getting 5-stars and other people's threads were.

Some people just aren't happy unless they have something to ***** about.

Not everybody is going to be happy, that just is not reality. It is sad to see that several have departed this site over the last few years, but those are choices they make....just like people can choose whether to click on certain threads or not.

I think the unfriendliness issue, other than me - because I'm just a misanthrope in general - is the anonymity. The unfriendliness became more so as more people who like to 'hide' joined the board. Back when we started 10 years we all tried to meet each other, organize lunch get togethers etc...

Then this place got 'too big' and the meanness increased as more people who have zero intention of ever getting out from behind their monitor arrived. You want to bring the "niceness" back? Require every member to attend at least one PoA get together every year or two.

This year we have two fly ins that are having their 10th event. Wings will be having its 10th Fly-In in May, and 6Y9 will be having its 10th event on Labor Day Weekend. And Gaston's will be having it's 11th. And if the pointy things are in the way, the California group has an 'eternal' meetup thread.

Amen Brother Ed!

I also think a lot of the vitriol in the main forums is simply spill over from the Spin Zone. If people want to go in there and beat each other up, that's fine. I choose not to but I don't have a problem with others who want to and think it's fun.

But they should leave the sh*t in there and many don't. And, what's interesting, is that the ones who insert the most politics (and Vitriol) in the halls of the general forum are mostly the same ones who are telling Captain not to let the door hit him in the ass. Funny how that works.

The bad taste is denigrating people, which this board is full of. Even denigrating someone with humor is in bad taste. The level at which it happens here is getting kind of excessive. We already have one thread dedicated to tearing into Captain and feeding on his flesh, how many more need be started?:dunno: It's just kind of sad.

Oh boo hoo. If someone wants to leave, they can stop posting; many may not even notice that he left.

Instead, Captain chose to pull out the flamethrower before he left, guaranteeing he will be noticed.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

We have a long way to go to even come close to the number of jerk threads he started.

We have lost a fair amount of quality contributors unfortunately. He was not one of them. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything he posted that was actually helpful.

I like to be open- the BeechTalk board requires real names (they changed to that policy within a couple of weeks of opening), and I strongly favor that approach.

There are many here who do not try to hide their identity - I rather prefer that approach.
But, as has been pointed out, even at BT, you get still get some serious and stoppid pizzing matches.

Use of real (or perceived real) names does not solve the problem that is the internet.

I can't remember who said it (maybe Tim Winters?), but the bigger issue is the lack of face to face interaction. The more folks meet face to face at get togethers or fly-ins, the less likely they are to get nasty on the forum.

When I first joined, it seemed like a large number of folks actually KNEW each other and I think that has diminished more than anything here.

I thought the same thing I think just about every time I type on a keyboard for non work related purposes.

I thought "I wonder if I can write something funny" I almost went the "I'm out of the closet" route but I scanned the original "Im out thread and saw the comment about someone insinuating he was drunk" and opted for "I'm out of beer"

I never once thought anything negative toward Captain. I quite enjoy his posts and I believe he will be back. I am not one of the people posting "Good riddance" because I don't feel that way.

Somehow I now feel I am in a round about way being told I dislike the guy and yet others are posting direct "Thank God he's gone" type stuff which is not how I feel and not something I would post if I did feel that way.

I am just trying to be cute. It is my role on this planet. And finally somebody (EdFred) agrees that I am cute.

There are 2 people on this forum that I have found myself actually angry at and I have fought with both of them and I feel better about them both having directly squabbled with them and I enjoy both of their posts.

If I really truly disliked captain, I wouldn't have posted anything. I am not one of these good riddance types. If I really had a problem with him, I would have probably argued with him as I did the other two. Or I would have just ignored his departure.

I have no ill feelings toward Captain. I am sad to see him go but I think he will be back. He did this once before and came back. I hope that transpires again.

If the fine line is intent, then I have a clear conscious.
My intent was not to harm Captain. It was to maybe make someone chuckle and bonus if I score a date with EdFred.

Did you think about Captain and what the reaction would be there? His point that he was making was completely valid, and you kept rolling against it without even realizing it. Your thought was "can I say something funny?" and that is fine, but it t shouldn't be the last thought on the matter. Regardless what we do, we need to also consider, "Who/what will will be adversely affected?" The lack of empathy is what keeps us where we are socially, a mean species.

What someone else does is irrelevant to what you should do. This shouldn't be a contest as to who can be the biggest jerk.

I don't think anyone is trying to compete. The guy left like a drama queen and some folks are rolling with it.

Was it? As I understand it from his own complaints, he was bitching about a lack of moderation in an unmoderated forum. Jesse clearly explained that to him.

Posted links before, our friends the scientists, have studied anonymity and found people are still the same level of jerks when forced to use their real names. Welcome to the internet. I love you all.

If that makes you feel better.

I sure don't see it that way.

Which is why it happens over and over and over again. Our society lacks empathy in a major way. We just don't really care what affect our words and actions have on each other.

Not surprising really.

Re: I'm Outside and it is very cold today

Why don't we have these problems at the airport? I've never seen a fist fight at an FBO. Everyone is so cool within close proximity to 100LL. :)

I saw a fist fight at an airport........ only ONCE...

At Oshkosh I ordered a top off for my 801 on Weds morning from Basler.. Since it is a show plane, I was with it ALL day Weds and ALL day Thur in the Zenith booth... I don't let ANYONE fuel my plane either.... When I was about to leave Thursday night around 9 PM for the dorms, the Basler guy rolls up..

I needed a first thing departure Fri morning so things were working out ok...

Till two guys from a few rows away walked over and demanded fuel first.... The fueling guy was good sized and had his GF in the truck and we had chatted about NASCAR for a minute or so before the two " hot heads" arrived...As he was filling up my toy, the two guys got into quite a " struggle" ..

I am not sure who was laughing the hardest... me or the fuel guy or his GF, but we all had tears in our eyes.....:rofl::rofl::lol:...

Ps.. I was the first plane out Friday morning...... Westbound off of 27.....:):):).. And. I kept it full power so all the sleeping campers had a V-8 wake up call...;);););)....

Good times...

Re: I'm Outside and it is very cold today

I'm hundreds of posts behind on PoA as always, but I guess this thread means Bryan said something and Captain snapped and left?

He seemed more grumpy as of late. Hope it's nothing bad going on in his real life. Didn't sound like the job stuff was great after the Piaggio place folded.

I still remember his early days when he showed up under the pseudonym and someone posted his real name and he lost it. That was interesting.

Still love the reverse high speed thread too. LOL. That was a classic.

Maybe he'll show up at OSH this year. There will be beer in the cooler...

Re: I'm Outside and it is very cold today

Ahh caught the closed thread. A little more caught up now.

I was busy with work this week when I got a note from a PoA insider that there was something going down about me having moderator privs or something goofy. And that the software wouldn't let someone block me.

They'd figured out that it was the software doing it because of the old podcast area.

Mmm-Kay. Never even knew I had the ability to mod the posts on the sub forum let alone that there was an anti-block thingy. First time it's come up, to my attention.

Just for the record, I told them they are welcome to delete the whole MHF forum if they like, if that's fix the problem.

We never got the forum traffic/use off the ground, and the podcast died and will probably remain dead due to bandwidth reasons.

We've talked about reviving it but my internet at the new place is so awful, recording the show would be hideous unless we did it via telephone.

Mike and E were traveling in a motor coach for a couple of years making their access to bandwidth difficult also. And Z was busy with school and getting her aerospace engineering degree and Doug had teenagers to raise.

I seriously doubt it's coming back. It was grand fun when the stars aligned so we could do it and we were looking to make it a little more serious and try harder at it, and then life hit all of us...

Anyhow, there's what I know about it all.

Cap got all bothered by what was essentially a bug.

Cap's gone, but AP is here and she still wants to block me. Heh. Her call. She posted she was annoyed with the anti-block too.

If it'll make AP happy, dump the MHF podcast sub-folder, PoA techies/mods...

Doesn't bother me at all.

I wouldn't want anyone to be forced to read my internet BS. Haha. No, seriously. ;)

I've said it before... I won't block anyone. Seems silly when all I gotta do is scroll faster on the scroll wheel to ignore stuff. Or just go
flying.

Cap didn't like me saying he had an ego. I thought (seriously) that he'd take it as an observation of the obvious, not pretend to be offended by it. We all have egos. Yawn. Big yawn. Pilot egos. Never seen those around here! Haha.

I think sometimes little stuff conveniently pops up in his life to be "angry" at when there's other stuff going bad for him. Maybe. (Shrug...)

I dunno. Some people are just high strung that way. Hell if I know. If he needs me saying he has an ego to give him an excuse to flip out, hey... sure... go for it. Flip away there, cupcake. Double axel with a twist. Wheeee.

As my favorite band says on one song...

It's your world
And I was just someone in it
I never wanted to be your problem
And it's your life
And I just wanted to see you live it
Be the one to help you solve 'em

Nighty night PoA. Gotta take the Mrs to a late supper.
