Tom, there are two different forks, the one you describe is NOT the one the op has.

There are THREE different forks. The early one was weaker, then for most of the production they used the one that the OP has, then toward the end they went to the Goodyear wheel with the cups.

There is an aluminum spacer between the fork and the wheel. This would put all of the shear force on a single point, like a screw cutter does.

Yep, for a shear failure, a tension failure (not what we have here but what some folks implied) would lead to the necking
