Especially when everyone on the left passes.

    "Picking up, I'm going alone."
    J-J-A-K-Q 4 points.
I'm talking Euchre, what did you think I was talking about?

    Who else plays?
I think only people in WI, MN, MI, and part of OH even know what it is.

I'm more a fan of no trump. Especially as an opening bid.

What I hate most is having that almost loner hand of JJA another Trump and then a K-off. And someone saves the A that takes the K. Worse is when they had 2 aces left and guessed correctly on which one to keep. I can't count the number of times that's happened.

Be careful. We are talking about cards here.

I played a lot of euchre in college at Georgia Tech. I think it was a guy from MD that started it there.

Played hearts a lot with college roommates. Losing hand had to drink a cup of beer, and that did not help at all. Or it did. Or, well, I can't remember...

I played it when in the service. It was some guy from Michigan if I remember right that started us playing it.

I am more inclined to go it alone with just the left bower than just the right bower. If your opponent has the right bower, you weren't going to win all of the tricks anyway.

But if I only have the left I'm going to need at least four in my hand.

You certainly need a good hand. But not necessarily 4 trumps. I would do it with the Left, the A, K, of trumps, and two off As. It's been a while, so I can't quite recall, but I might do it if the last two non-trumps are AK of the same suit. Also, it helps if my partner is the dealer and I am ordering it up.

It's also going to depend what position I'm in. If everybody passed and I'm making the call then they probably don't have that good of a hand and 3 is probably good enough.

Hours of "combat" Spades, played over cruise box at Kadena AFB, with a ratty old deck of cards, while waiting for a "sortie" to return. Some of those games were full-contact. And the women were usually the loudest and ones who threw the first punch. Sore losers for sure! I think thats why I'm not a big fan of card games now days.

Played a lot of Bridge in college...probably couldn’t even fake a bid or play a hand now. Remember it being a great way to avoid studying.

Reminds me of the times in middle school when we’d play blackjack and the teachers would get onto us for ‘gambling’. I guess it was against the curriculum to gamble away your lunch money.

My wife's family loves playing Hearts, Spades, Euchre... I can only take so much of it, then I get more tempted to take up drinking. Or stepping into traffic. Or something.

I've heard of it, but the one thing I know about Euchre is that anyone who knows how to play Euchre doesn't seem to want to teach anyone who doesn't know how to play, to play.

So I don't know how to play Euchre.

Now, Sheepshead, I love. But I think that one is strictly Wisconsin and Germany. If you get on Yahoo Sheepshead and start playing and ask where everyone is from, you invariably get at least four people from Wisconsin, and the last one will say "I live in Arizona, but I grew up in Stevens Point" or "My parents are from Wisconsin" or something.

I'm guessing the games are similar, but Sheepshead is probably a little weirder. It was definitely invented by drunk people.

That's because by the time you show up to 6Y9, it's dark, we've already been drinking, and teaching Euchre isn't going to end well.
