I flew this plane the day before this happened.

Apparently, the young pilot was taking some young ladies up for a sightseeing your... Pics on twitter...

And, my guess is he didn't stick the tanks during preflight...
 
I was fueling at MNV this afternoon and overheard some of the guys on the ramp talking about this.

They got lucky...

That trick has been around for 100 years... "Oh no! We are running out of gas out here in the middle of nowhere! Better pull over and park somewhere." :D

Cannot say that doing it with an airplane would end like the young man might want, however...
 
You run out of gas and they give you permission to use an interstate as a runway. The overpass just made it look more dramatic.

Hmmm. I saw he took off alone... Wonder how likely they are to fly with him again?
