How often do you replace your alternator belt?

I have some upcoming prop off maintenance. Trying to decide if that's a good time to replace the belt, regardless of condition.

What are your thoughts on belt replacement? Haven't had time to look at what the service manual says about that.

Are you familiar with the look and feel differences between a new and old belt? If so and the old belt feels good I would likely just continue to run it.

Every time I overhaul the engine, whether it needs it or not. Of course, my engine's been off twice in 3 years, so that may not be the best metric...

Id replace it of the prop was off unless it was only a couple years old. Might also consider having a spare wrapped around the nose of the crank. That way you don't have to pull the prop off if it breaks, which basically guarantees it won't.

This.

I’ve seen it zip-tied, but also saw one pic on the Vans AF site using an Adel clamp to cinch the spare.

I agree with the spare; particularly with a constant speed.

IMHO The chances of the Tech having an adapter to PROPERLY torque the

prop are very slim.

You can see mine tucked in under the pushrod tubes. It's wrapped in hose insulation to give it a little heat protection and make it big enough to wedge in there. Works good. I wouldn't trust it long term after baking in that position for years, but I suspect it'd get you home.
