I plan to have my Lancair stripped and repainted soon. Was thinking about a white pearl. I am not the artistic type and have a hard time with these sort of decisions. Where does one start when deciding on a livery or paint scheme?

Here she is now:

I have always wished that I could duplicate the color of the white pelicans. They are amazingly visible. Amazingly visible and easy to spot is something I like in an airplane.

It looks kinda slow so you need a paint job to make it look fast.

sorry, I am devoid of artistic ability so I just thought I'd offer some smartassery instead. Nice looking airplane.

Yup, the painter and a couple of the other guys at their field own STOL planes. They told me that when I flew into their field today they thought I was doing a low pass fly by at max throttle because I was so fast on approach. They said they were shocked when they heard me touchdown.

White pearl with a candy apple red stripe and a blue flip flop over the whole thing.

Wow, with you standing next to your plane I, realize only now how tiny Lancairs are.
Beautiful bird, though.

I like the more classic paint schemes:

Pearl would be really nice, but I might do the top of the cowling in a matte accent color to prevent any glare. Then accent it somehow with the same matte color.

I'd try checkerboard to get a classic racing style. Google these three words: checkerboard paint aircraft, then click "images". Lots of examples there.

I went back and forth on emails with my painter for about 6 months tweeking things. He was a master of drawing me out as to what I wanted because I am a zero when it cones to being artistic. Here is John Stahrs website, and he has done lots of Lancairs.

Rebel flag, and horns that play Dixie. Be daring.

Horns on a plane, how original! Finally a way to get the attention of the slowpoke at the hold short, who thinks the airport is his own personal playground. I wonder if I could register out of the country and get tail number D-IXIE?? :D

Personally, I would go for a cleaner paint job. Don't really care for all of the swooshes, curls and wavy "accent stripes" that are all the rage right now. Pearl sounds great, then choose your favorite color for lower fuselage. Anything would look good.

Don't know about that tail number but I plan on having all of my tail numbers end in YV. That would be Yankee Victor for those who are phonetically challenged. :D

Henning mentioned candy apple red which I have always liked and even considered as a primary color. Does anyone know if I can go colors other than white shades on top given that this is a composite?

I like the extra paint scheme.

I like these ideas. Keep them coming.

I have seen composite aircraft with colors other than white on top. However, I believe that Cirrus has something in their ICA that restricts what paints can be used due to the heat build up caused by certain colors. Maybe there is similar info for Lancair?

Candy Apple Red goes over white (I prefer Pearl), silver, or gold quite well.
