It is Columbus Day and although the idiots that teach in public schools and colleges have preempted it to rant about domineering white males, that oppress women and minorities, I hope you all had a nice one.

Happy Columbus day. If only I lived somewhere I could get a good Pizza while watching the parade.

Have you actually read up on Columbus? I'm not a "PC" kind of guy but he's not derided because he was a white guy who might have succeeded because he was white and had advantages in life - no, he was a mass murdering, native-enslaving a-hole who got lost. This is one case where the "popular history" really doesn't even scratch the surface, especially when there are so many other explorers who were more daring and more successful.

Also, most everyone knew the world was round in 1492.

Ted are you a naive pompous idiot? If you think that all the other stories about all our other heros are any more accurate or not white washed than Columbus? He was just a admiral to the Spanish Queen...How about Ceaser? Neapolitan? Popes of the same time?

Here is a clue: History is written by and for the winners. Ask the American Indians.

Pick a hero and lets do some research.....

He left, not knowing where he was going.
Arrived, not knowing where he was.
Returned, not knowing where he'd been.

For this he gets a national holiday!!

There's some irony that a "Florida Cracker" is celebrating a day promoted nationally by the Knights of Columbus who saw it as a way of promoting the interests of Catholic immigrants (Irish and Italian) who were widely persecuted at the time, but no where more than in the deep south where they were KKK targets.

Of course, all of that was early last century. Today the KKK is in full remission and most Florida crackers have accepted last century's Catholic immigrants and even made them their own, though some continue to struggle with this century's Catholic masses yearning to breathe free.

Long live white male culture and those fine 'ol Florida crackers! Rebel Yell

(though I'm thinking that many would prefer to just celebrate Columbus Day and today's America without all of the idiocy)

If I recall from a previous thread, "Florida Cracker" has nothing to do with race, but go on thinking you are right and almighty.

The Spanish legacy of the first European explorers into the Americas can be seen from the Pacific coast all the way to the Patagonia region in South America. San Francisco, Nevada, Colorado, Florida are a few of this legacy

Columbus first landing into the new world was actually on San Salvador Island (MYSM) in the Bahamas. It was not until 1513 that Ponce de Leon then governor of Puerto Rico landed in what is today Florida USA. This marks the actual first known European landing in the US. He sailed from San Juan, PR in search of the fountain of youth as told by the natives.

The discovery and settlement of the New World by the Europeans is probably the greatest event in mankind history.

How's that worse then all the 18-24 year olds who will blow the brains out of some dude half way around the world in the mid-east for a college education and veterans benefits??

Columbus went over to another continent and took what he wanted, killed or shackled anyone who gave him a hard time about it, the US has been doing that since I was born, just the way we roll I guess :dunno:

Well said.

The European age of exploration was a global game changer. Bloody and ugly at times but change and human progress often are. The old world and the new world are now THE world. Columbus Day is our only new world celebration of it so I'm thinking we should.

The interesting question is where we are now and where this takes us. The Web has connected EVERYONE into a real time network. It took 500 years, give or take a century or two, for the Age of Enlightenment to finally mature into our post colonial world. It will probably only take 100 for all this connectedness to mature into something we probably can't imagine now.

Should be an interesting ride as long as we avoid a new dark age, so lets keep learning and changing.

well, not everyone is connected. If I understand correctly, there is lots of web censorship in China and N Korea and other places.

I'm all for blowing the brains out of people that hate us and our way of life.

They love our way of life, then even love Americans they just hate the way our government keeps putting dictators in and using CIA to keep them in office even while they kill and enslave their own people.

I hear you but think about it; the Web is in China, it's just censored. And the censorship is routinely circumvented by the technically proficient. North Korea - no idea. One of the few places where cellular networks aren't pervasive and yet, I'm sure the elites have Web access. But yes, it is a dark hole on a bright, interconnected global community. It's time is coming. They are a wart on a charging bull.

I'm pretty sure they just hate America plain and simple.

I think we're forgetting the true spirit of Columbus day here- not having to go to school or work(for those lucky enough to get it off) and not having to do any holiday related stuff either. That's all the day really means to anyone if we're being honest.

And who couldn't use a day off? Come on, don't ruin a good thing.

What a refreshing trip down the lane of your racist mantras.

Yeah that's one of the biggest tricks played on the American people, by our media. "They hate us and our way of life". What a cop-out

Who are "they"?

If "they" is referring to Arabs/Middle Eastern people, I know many of them and none of them have a hatred for America or our way of life. In fact, it's just the opposite.

Now what our government does over there, in our name, is another story.

I'm not adverse to paving their part of the world in glass.

Remember 9-11-01.

And kill hundreds of millions of innocent people? I imagine the ratio of people that shoot at us is about 1-5% - that group is the group that needs 5.56 aspirin - the rest are good people. (From what I've heard)

No problem with the 5.56 aspirin. But if those folks are so good, why aren't they out helping snuff out the bad guys, instead of sitting on their hands (or celebrating in the streets when the World Trade Center buildings came down)?

Well I wouldn't expect much help while we are kicking in doors and pointing guns around their homes.

As for "they hate America" NO
It's those who supports the "patriot act", Gitmo, seceret trials, gov't phone taps and censorship, firearms bans, "wars" against civilians in other counties, weakening out county with gov't spending, people who take up arms for un-constitutional causes, or those who hate people who ask questions and debate, etc etc. THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HATE AMERICA

The biggest issue for me are all the kids who think they are "protecting and serving", though they have no idea or care for what they are really protecting or who they are honestly serving, as long as the check clears and we pay for their college thell kill whoever the current gov't wants.

"Remember 9-11-01" The rally cry of the weak minded masses!

Try Remembering 9-17-1787

We are running full speed down the path to a dystopian society.

Not sure what celebrations you saw personally (I didn't see any from the Arabs/Muslims that I know), but if we're talking about what was played on Fox News (and others) over and over again, it was a lie.

Another media hyped myth that's been debunked. The celebration was actually a local Palestinian celebration that took place prior to the WTC disaster. Fox News(and maybe others) played it over and over again, knowing that it had nothing to do with 9/11.
