So I sent this letter to them this morning,

To whom it may concern,

I just had the pleasure, and I use that term extremely sarcastically, of parking my Comanche 250 for two nights at RYY – Monday October 12th and Tuesday October 13th of this month. It’s obvious that you are not in the business of dealing with anyone who isn’t there to purchase a few thousand gallons of Jet-A, but the great thing about it was that I got to pay for your ‘services’ as if I was one of those patrons. When I arrived, Tower/Ground directed me to turn right to parking. I turned off at A3 and entered your ramp area. No one was there to direct me where to park, so I taxied until I found a place.

I wasn’t parked in front of the Hawthorne building, I had found a spot all the way down in front of H&L Maintenance at the west of the parking area. I asked H&L if where I parked was OK, and I was informed that I needed to talk to Hawthorne about parking. So I walked the nearly 400 yards from where I had parked at the far west end talked to the girls at the desk. Now, the girls were friendly, and when they asked where I parked, I said I could taxi the plane back down to near the FBO, and they said that wasn’t necessary the line guys would tow the plane to where it needed to be, and I assumed park it and tie it down. I filled out the paperwork, and was given a business card in case I needed anything. I do not recall being offered a ride back to my plane, so I walked all the way back down to where I was parked and unloaded my bags. I then walked back to the FBO entrance with my 4 bags, used the restroom, and waited about 5 minutes for my ride to arrive.

Upon return, and my departure, on Wednesday the 14th I assumed I would be paying around $10 for a tiedown fee as I had the last time I was at RYY, and at numerous class D and C airports I have frequented, but that was not the case here. Instead, I was given a bill totaling $75 for two nights. I did not take this up with the friendly women at the desk because to me that’s like yelling at the wait-staff for my steak being cooked incorrectly. I was offered a ride to my plane, which was still located 400 yards away in front of H&L. But it was a nice day, and I had a 4 hour flight ahead of me, and I declined the ride to stretch the legs. So the line guys had not moved the plane as I had been told it would, and when I arrived at the parking space, my plane had not even been tied down. But I did get to pay for a tiedown fee for two nights at $20 for each night – even though it wasn’t tied down. And the best part about that is thunderstorms came through on Monday night. While there wasn’t high winds, there could have been.

In addition to the $40 in tiedown-but-we-didn’t-actually-tie-it-down fees, I saw a $25 facility fee on my bill. I assume this is the fee for not having my plane towed to a proper parking space, not having someone direct me where to park, using the restroom and walking through the only exit to the parking lot. There were two $5 security fees, which I assume are required by the airport, which I understand have to be passed along. And maybe the facility fee is also an airport wide fee, in which case it is what it is. But considering it wasn’t the case with the previous FBO I used when I visited, nor any of the other C and D FBOs I frequent, I am doubting that is the case. Unfortunately the other FBO is gone, and you have a monopoly for transient visitors.

So, for using exactly none of your services, not parking on your ramp space, and not being tied down, I got to pay for all of it as if I did anyway. Well, I did use the rest room, but I don’t think a $75 rest room and walk through fee is all that acceptable. It’s no wonder you have comments disabled on Airnav.

I miss the old FBO.

We will see if I get any response.

Is there anyway through the fence at RYY without dealing with these guys? I'd use another Atlanta airport, but my relatives live just across Cobb Pkwy, so this is really the most convenient for them.

Next time, try Aircraft Specialists on the south side. I don't know what they charge, but I'll bet it's not $75 for two nights of tie down space, sans being tied down.

They weren't listed on Airnav, so I didn't know they even existed. It appears they moved to LZU though. :dunno:

Ive never understood this... if someone is not outside to park me or making their way over, i park my plane right in front of the damn front door. I never offer to help someone who wasnt there to help me.

Typical GA attitude by the FBO going into metro areas in my experience. My only recommendation regarding the correspondence is to include what you would like to be made whole.

It's too bad that air nav ,allows FBOs to disable comments. At one time most FBOs allowed the comments as they where mostly positive. Lately the FBOs seem to be after all your money, and don't want info on there operations posted, some may even be trying to deceive the GA pilots.

Aircraft Specialists has been at LZU for about 20 years. Maybe airnav lists them under "Jet Center". Very nice people over there.

The FBO you went to on the north side has changed ownership 3 times in the last 10 years.

Do not forget that you can add a review on FlightAware. Try this direct link. Comments and reviews there cannot be disabled by the owner.

Calling the owner/president of the FBO and talking directly to them might be a good option to let them know. They might not have a good idea how well/unwell their business operates. Try.

When the old owner of the FBO on the north side bought out the south side it was bad enough. It got even worse when Hawthorne bought out that owner and immediately closed the south side and raised fuel prices (already high) 50 cents a gallon. I haven't been over there in a month and a half, but I am not aware of Aircraft Specialists having an operation at RYY.

Oh, wait. Sorry, I'm mixing up the airports. I jumped the gun and was thinking of LZU. I saw "Hawthorne" and got sidetracked since they used to have an operation at LZU.

I'd have left out the sarcastic comments. State your case, state your proposed remedy and go on. You look like a petulant child phrasing things the way you did.

This.

What was standard service 20 years ago is now stellar service. It's common nowadays to have no one park us, even at regional airports.

If no one comes out to park me, I park right in front of the main door, or as close as I can get. Why wouldn't I?

I actually got a phone call from Jean(sp?) about half an hour ago and we had 15 minute conversation. She was very apologetic, and said the line guys dropped the ball on it. They were informed about me, but just didn't do it. She did say she refunded (although it hasn't showed up on my card yet) the fees for services not rendered.

I said I knew where they were coming from and based on their website, that jet traffic was their main revenue stream and focus, but also explained that in focusing on that and having fees that are pretty high for what we get it definitely feels like they don't want piston single planes there, and that's fine but when you're the only place on the field we're stuck, unless we want to fly into Cartersville, or someplace further out.

She said they got a new GM and they/he raised the fees, and everything is very strict and they aren't allowed waive any fees now or anything. I got the impression everything is a math formula, and everyone is just a tail number and not a person. I went into the whole a lot of this flying is personal and we can't pass the costs along to anyone as it's coming our pockets angle like the corporate guys jets do and, we don't need all the services they offer for the jets. We just need a place to tie down, and at a certain point when you make it feel like we (piston GA) aren't welcome, we won't show up anymore. I mentioned the reason RYY is there is because they don't want GA at ATL, but now the reliever FBOs are now acting the same way as the class B FBOs. I asked that she pass that along to management, and put the fees on their website so we know what to expect before we get there.

She seemed to understand where we (piston GA) are coming from, but it also seemed like her hands were tied with how things are run there.

So you decided to head east vs. west after Gastons?

Come on up to Cherokee County, KCNI. Very friendly FBO, reasonably priced fuel, and you won't get hosed on fees and such. And, if you get lucky, you may even see a B-17 (The Movie Memphis Belle) parked there. It's in and out a few times every year.....

Just a guess, but Cartersville or Paulding would absolutely love your business. No mode C needed, no radio, no BS. Make the fam come get you for a 10 min drive.

It is what it is. I got tagged $42 for a 2 hour lunch once. I told them I will never ever darken their door again, and tell everyone I know to run far, far away. Atlantic Aviation, KADS. Never again you scumbags.

I understand being a little upset but in my opinion you brought most of it on yourself. You chose to park far away from the fbo, didn't ask for a ride back to your airplane, didn't ask for it to be moved, didn't ask how much the tiedown fee was, and left your plane unattended and not tied down based on alot of assumptions. Yes they could have been more courteous, less expensive, and more accommodating but you could have also been more vocal about things and taken some personal responsibility. I don't park anywhere overnight without at least asking what the fee is and I certainly don't leave my plane on the ramp untied. Even if it is going to be moved later it should still be tied when unattended. This post reads like a bad hotel review left on a website after a stay yet the guest didn't say a word to the front desk about their issues while there.

Call Hanson Aero. They have a small ramp on the North side of the field. They are a light GA friendly enterprise, the question is whether they have sufficient ramp space. You could also try DLK, but I'm not enamored with the owner.

Back before it got bought out three times, the guy who ran Hawethorne Dulles treated the small fry with all the same courtesy he did anybody else ( a stark difference from the Signature guys across the field). His philosophy is that you never know if the guy in his Bonanza on Saturday isn't the same one who's riding in the back of a G-IV on Monday.

Haven't been over there in a long time now. Used to go and eat at the Chophouse. As I understand it now you cannot park to eat at the restaurant without paying a ramp fee.

Thanks for the info. I will keep them in mind next time I head down there.

You're looking to get boned by anybody. :D

Most of the big places I've flow into have waived ramp fees and most else if I just bought some gas. Its usually overpriced, but I figure they gotta pay the pretty girl behind the counter and keep the loos clean.

I look closer at ForeFlight comments these days that Airnav comments...

I don't have any iDevices. And since Foreflight hates everyone that doesn't have iWhatever, it's impossible to know what's said on there.

So, Ed,

Should we all send them a jar of Vaseline with a little note asking if it will help to replenish their stock?

:goofy:

Wow, really? I ate there maybe a year ago and paid nothing then. Very sorry to hear this news.

Funny. The class D at KPSM has the cheapest 100LL in the area, and they wave the overnight fees if you buy fuel. Wish more were like them. Depressing to see that many FBOs are going after the "upscale" crowd.

You know....we oughta get a group of 5-10 of us that do that when any one of us pays "monopoly" fees at various FBOs that don't really want us there.

What would the threshold be for...
Landing fee?
Tiedown (whether you actually get tied down or not) fee?
Service Fee?
Facility Charge?
And my new favorite...
Security (at a place that has no security) Fee?

I was going to mention those but...

I knew Ed was not up to the task of buying the best tool out there for flying with.

Heh. ;) ;) ;)

(Ducking. Note I didn't say they were good phones. I said FF is the best.)

Seriously though, FF does have editorial say over the comments and has removed some inappropriate ones over time, but not many. Negative comments are allowed.

Next time pay by check and stop it.

I think I would be tempted to do it and tell them sue me for the lack of said service they charged for.

What would the threshold be for...
Landing fee? $25
Tiedown (whether you actually get tied down or not) fee? $25
Service Fee? $0...WTF?
Facility Charge? $0...WTF?
And my new favorite...
Security (at a place that has no security) Fee? $0...WTF?

They have a web interface now, so it's not impossible.

I've seen no evidence that they hate you, but given your tone here, I suppose it's a possibility! :)

He was just mad that he had to park so far away from the door. All that lemonaide he drinks makes him have to pee...

...very, very badly.

I spoke to Jet Center about daily and weekly rates. They were really friendly. I didn't see Hawthorne listed on Foreflight.

He can't leave out sarcastic comments. Not in his DNA

The treat us very nicely. We get a fuel discount for being EAA members and allow me to use their conference room for EAA BOD meetings when we can't meet at our chapter hangar.

Gwinnett Aero has also been very good to us. They give us a fuel discount when we fly Young Eagles and when we use their ramp for the Tri-Motor or B-17. They come and check on us regularly and bring us bags of ice. They also provide a hangar for the Tri-Motor.

That is accurate, flew friends there about a month ago for dinner and the ramp fee was a surprise... Kinda ****ed about it but my date was hot so I stayed cool ;)
