Was surprised to open my email this morning and find an email from Garmin that they now have a web-based flight planning app. Okay, they've had flightpln.com for a while, but this one mimics the interface of Garmin Pilot and shares flightplans with the mobile app. Haven't been able to play with it too much, but it looks pretty good. One of the things I really miss about iFly is the ability to flight plan at my computer while I'm researching a trip, especially since GP works poorly on my 10" android tablet.

As a GarminPilot user, this would be great news if I regularly used my laptop. I only fire it up these days to update the SD cards for my G3X and GTN databases. Otherwise, I'm on my iPad exclusively.

No rubber banding capability that I can see. Maybe I haven't figured it out yet.

Yeah, when I left GP 3 or 4 years ago, that seemed like a no brainer.

I signed in using my Garmin account for database updates, and it let me in, populated my aircraft info, let me view airport info, etc., but when I tried to flight plan, it started barking for a subby.

Just played with it for a few minutes. I have a GP subscription. It is pretty slick. I didn't see rubber-banding yet. Not a huge deal for a desktop interface, but I suspect they'll add it soon. They have the GP rubber-banding icon, but have it set for just centering the route right now. New flight plan sync'd instantly with my the app on my phone. It includes the W&B tool and some other goodies. Pretty good timing for the release with the uncertainty on the cost/quality of ForeFlight going forward. This is a nice value-added for GP subscribers.

Tried to plot a Friday XC I have planned and it's a bit... undercooked, at least in Chrome. I hope they'll keep the steady infusion of resources to make this great. I'd love to replace SkyVector, Airnav, windy, and fltplan from my pre-planning toolkit and just go to one place for everything.

I was shocked when I saw this on FB this morning. Something I always wanted and it doesn't cost extra.

You can see that it's in a bit of a primitive state, but should come along pretty well over time.

For years I've heard people ask about a Web version. Now that ForeFlight has sold, I bet Garmin is looking at picking up a lot of customers if (when?) the new owners raise the prices.

And I wonder how many of the FF staff are bailing now while there are opportunities over at Garmin Pilot? :)

That's an interesting thought. It remains to be seen how and to what extent the PE purchase of ForeFlight will affect its pricing and features. But in the meantime, Garmin would be foolish not to do a bit of recruiting for the GP team on the basis of "better the devil you know".

And Boeing/FF/TB may have a lucrative retention package dangling in front of their impacted employees that’s contingent on staying with FF for a year after the sale concludes.

And I just saw Garmin’s remote mounted CO detector GCO14. I wanted a CO detector but I didn’t want a non Garmin product mounted on my panel so I passed and bought a portable CO detector. I might see if I can add the GCO14 to my system later.

The FAA had a Webinar on CO2 a few years ago. At the end the presenter actually recommended a few external/portable monitors. I wish I could remember the various options, but with a little searching you probably can find a recording of the Webinar.

It might have been during COVID.

So I guess Garmin *still* hasn't caught up with ForeFlight? :D :stirpot:

Garmin definitely has more opportunity to pick up some subscribers now.

Probably zero of them. Garmin, as far as I've been able to tell, is hard-and-fast, 100% in person, no remote work and has lost some very valuable employees who had to move for unrelated reasons. I would happily work there if they allowed remote work with occasional visits to the office, but family has me stuck in Wisconsin and that's not going to change.

Right now it looks like it requires a GTN Xi navigator or a GI 275 MFD or HSI. I've got a non-Xi GTN and a GI 275 AI. Facepalm.

and I have a GI275 EIS. Strange that a CO warning can't be integrated into that...oh well I like my panel mounted Guardian Avionics detector.

I like this new web based Pilot. Played with it a little bit. My W&B profiles were transferred for my planes but I can't figure out how to enter weights for the various stations.

Other than that I really like it

originally I tried entering it right there under 'people' but it doesn't work, it just multiplies the ONE weight u put in by the # of people. click on the weight and balance link and u can enter individually there.

Is *ALL* of Garmin's coding going on in-house? I'd be sort of shocked if they didn't have some outside companies working on different projects. So I could see someone one or a couple of former FF people forming their own company and then marketing to G Pilot to be a contractor.

And I could see everything for the Navigators and other Garmin Devices being all in house. But G Pilot and the Website could easily be farmed out. At least partially.

Well, I guess it is time for a Foreflight, Garmin Pilot throw down! lol. I tried GP years ago, but just couldn’t get past my familiarity with Foreflight, so didn’t make a switch. Also, I think the preflight weather information provided on FF is much better than GP, hence the original name Fore Flight, aka, before flight. FF started as a preflight weather device with limited preflight route briefing, but has evolved over the years. I have not seen that evolution in preflight weather information from GP. Right now, I’m taking a wait and see attitude.

I dunno... But IIRC the Pilot team isn't in Olathe they're in Minnesota somewhere because Garmin Pilot wasn't originally a Garmin product, it was an acquisition... And I can't remember what the company was before either.

Perhaps it's because I'm on a Mac, and an older one at that (macOS Catalina version 10.15.7), but the link just leads me to a blank black web page.

On my tablet, the page invites me to either download the app or visit the site from a desktop, so there's definitely a browser check. Interestingly, using "desktop mode" in my tablet's chrome browser DOES work.

Just tried to open it on Firefox on my Mac. Same result, blank black web page.

Cool feature I've wanted on flight planning software that it has. Click on an airport, go to fuel and there's a button for sort for airports nearby by 100LL price. Use case for me is a long XC that has a fuel stop on the way. Lay out your route without the stop and click on an airport that is roughly halfway. Sort by price and find an airport to potentially fuel at. With differences in fuel over $2/gal that can be meaningful money. I've been able to do that in skyvector, but only by eyeballing and zooming too far out loses some of the fuel pricing.

Small thing, but useful for me.

The best I've seen for fuel is air nav. Put in your desired destination, and leg length desired, and it will give multiple stops, and you can sort by cheapest overall and a few other ways. Used it to plan a trip in a c150 from Denver to Orlando.

I wrote a service that does this and had planned on building a website on top of it, but I never got around to it. Now that I’m using mostly mogas I have no incentive.
