Fortress GA airports **rant warning**

what actually bothers me is knowing my side door at home is unlocked :p
The last flight me and dad went on someone broke into dad's house. Well... something. Hyper pup chewed the wood on her cage allowing 2 of the rebar pickets to drop out. She opened the door to my house. Both doors on the garage. Then went next door to dad's and opened his garage door then the mud room door. She was chilling on my couch when I got home clearly upset she didn't get to go with.

To the OP: Check out 4B8....
I love Robertson. I've landed there too, but never exited the plane. It is crazy to see the tower to your right on launching RW2. 4B8 was the closest I've ever been to a stall spin base to final. Scared the crap out of me. Probably my best flying lesson right there.

I fly out of KHFD, I walk into the FBO they buzz me in and I'm grabbing the keys from the flight school and I'm off. I went to KMMK, no real FBO to see if there were any planes / hangars for sale one the bulletin board and the FBO is always locked.

I miss the days of riding my bike as a young teen to the local GA airport and sitting on the picnic tables watching planes take off and land. Kids will never know that level of access/freedom.

We can't complain that kids only want to stay inside playing video games because we locked them out.

Rant over .....

These same kids are not going to open air basketball court, pond to fish, community pool to swim, riding a bike or a host of other activities and you think kids inside playing video games is caused by locked FBOs. Maybe that’s the problem.

Obviously not a direct correlation. I can say on our community FB page there is one loud mouth Karen complaining about kids on dirt bikes.

When she isn't complaining about those darn kids she is probably writing letters to close those noisy, polluting GA airports.

Locking your doors is an easy, low cost deterrent to discourage the most opportunistic would-be bad guys from coming in. There's pretty much no cost to taking that preventative step.

Lock the door and put a sign on the exterior side that states; "This door locked for your protection"

Old airport was fortressified, new one is wide open. Out in the country, though, so if a kid comes by he *wants* to visit. Orchard on the other side of the hangar access road. Airport owner lives by the entry, though.

Not only is there no fencing, the lock on the door of my hangar can be opened with a screwdriver. Several other folks with hangars have given me their combinations in case I need access to tools or anything.

Like it here. Local EAA chapter is based on the end hangar in my row. If I fly on certain Saturdays, they're flying Young Eagles and the kids get a kick out of my airplane....

btw I'm glad MY airport is heavily fortressed. there are other non-fortressed places I can visit when I want to.

I went on a five day camping trip and when I got back I couldn't find the keys to my car parked in the driveway. Finally found them in the ignition where I left them. Maybe things aren't the same as they were back in the 60's but you know, kids got kidnapped and murdered back then too. Heck we even had Charles Manson. What we didn't have was 24/7 news, it came on at 6 and 10 every night for half an hour but there was probably an equal amount of gloom and doom if you really take the time to think about it. I mean, people were building fallout shelters in their back yards for cripe's sake.

The ones that drive me nuts are the ones that will trap me INSIDE if I land there after-hours. Like... why?!

A colleague and I drove from Windsor CT to Boston to catch a Celtics game courtesy of one of our vendors. Not only did this colleague leave his keys in the car, he left it unlocked and running. The crazy part is that it only burned 1/4 tank in 8+ hours. We still laugh about it.

Duck and Cover.

I think I've been to some airports where the lock on the door of the hangar *is* a screwdriver

The whole thing changed after 911. That was the watershed event. Before that GA airports were wide open just like they were in the 80s when I learned to fly.

I know! I landed at a field in KY after hours— I think it was Mt Sterling--getting out was like escape from Colditz! Had to scale the fence to get back in the next morning too! Have an author friend who is writing a book based in Meeker,CO, it has some scenes at the airport there that he didn’t get exactly right, I suggested he just drive out to the field and ask some pilots. He tried to but couldn’t get inside to talk to anyone and found it unwelcoming and uncomfortable. At Luray Caverns airport in the Shenandoah valley, there is no way to go to the FBO from the public side, it is within locked gates, you need to call someone and have the buzz you in. At my home airport the last manager built an aviation-themed playground outside the fence, perfect spot to watch planes. That is going in the right direction.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Some people pay good money to get locked into a tiny escape room with contrived puzzles to solve, in a limited time, no less.
Those same people pay good money to bash things with a baseball bat and unleash their rage. Can I do that for free too?

Yes, but you have to fill it with candy first. And also pay for the candy. And the piñata. Also you have to bring your own baseball bat. I didn’t exactly fly to [redacted] Municipal in a stolen airplane.

I was thinking of a rage room. Tow bar would work just fine.

Some people don't have to pay anything at all, in fact they take money from other people to do it. You know -- robbery, drug dealing, embezzlement...
