I recently started getting Flying Magazine in the mail. I don't remember signing up for it but the email address is the same as IFR mag, which we did sign up for and don't seem to be getting any more. I would never voluntarily sign up for FLYING mag but I do miss the IFR mag.

I have received no information from IFR Magazine about their demise. I saw the previous thread here but there should have been some official communication from IFR/Flying in the last couple of months.

Yep. Totally relevant. I thought I searched for this problem but I missed that.

Flying mag sux when compared to IFR. Straight to the trash.
Different target audience. Today's Flying is a lifestyle magazine. Same as dozens of others, but with airplanes. Flying USED to be an enthusiast magazine that offered something for a wide segment of the pilot and flying enthusiast group. IFR? Much more nut and bolty. For the the hardcore pilot. About as far away from today's FLYING target market as you're gonna get.

In addition to what happened to IFR, they have done the same thing (I understand) to Aviation Consumer and based on the resubscription offer they sent me, they are trying to kill Kitplanes too. AvWeb is a shell of its former self now that it is owned by Firecrown.

I get that this is a tough environment for aviation magazines and other media with a narrow focus, but Firecrown is knocking off its own aviation media like Michael took out rivals at the end of the Godfather.

I recall reading that the new owner envisions it as an "aspirational" magazine. I like the physical quality of the magazine, but I'm personally feeling increasingly alienated by the content, which seems to be mostly multi-million dollar jets, G3000 panels, turbine-singles, and Carbon Cubs. And I say that as a guy with a six-figure salary, so I can't imagine how the guy with the hourly blue-collar job feels. AOPA Pilot remains pretty decent, EAA Sport Aviation is usually interesting, and Plane and Pilot is a breezy read, so I'll probably stick with those. Never got IFR Magazine, so I think I missed out there. I don't think I'll renew my Flying subscription once it ends.

Those selling the multi-million dollar jets are the ones who can afford to advertise. It takes money to make money in this (and many other) business.

It was bad enough to cash a check for a 3 year subscription WHILE KNOWING they would be sending no more issues. Sending Flying was just something they did just to insult and anger.

For myself, it’s been many years since Flying was good. Besides aiming for the Gucci crowd with kerosene burners and panels that cost more than a lot of perfectly good airplanes, it felt like the columnists were becoming grumpy and arrogant. It wasn’t about passion for flying or finding escape and joy in it, but more about their latest IFR yawner or how the turboprop just wasn’t enough, and the jet wasn’t either so the surgeon had to become a corporate pilot. Just no longer relatable. Lane Wallace was still good, but she was the last holdout.
