Flying in Hawaii

Just a very few of my pictures from flying in Hawaii...
Southern tip of the big island. There's a WWII fighter strip in this picture. Can you find it?
I think this is the NORTHERN tip of the Big Island. ( 20.257647° -155.877019°).

It's called Mookini Heiau. According to Mo'okini Family genealogical chants this Heiau was built in 480 A.D. under the direction of Kahuna Nui Kuamo'o Mo'okini and dedicated to the God Ku. The descendants of the Mo'okini Family have been it's guardians for the past 1500 years. For centuries the Heiau was "closed", reserved exclusively for Hawaii's kings. In Kohala it was the focus of religious life and order.

In the photo Upolu airport is out of frame on the shoreline less than a mile away to the left.

Haven't rented a plane, but we did rent a boat out of a place near the Kona airport. They give you a GPS that helps you find moorings near places where you can do some neat diving. Too bad all I had with me was snorkel gear. It's about the end of my endurance to get down about 30 feet where the interesting stuff starts before I have to return to breathe. The only other thing as I'm coming out of the little harbor I look at the depth sounder and the thing is just displaying dashes. Then I realized there's no continental shelf off Hawaii. I was in over 600' depths.

Just be careful if you sign up for a "Three hour tour, a three hour tour".:) Especially if everyone calls the CFI "Skipper".
It was a three-hour tour, but I was the captain of the vessel.

Awesome!!!
Absolutely beautiful.
Any issues with traffic?

No traffic problems at all, on any of the flights.

You are correct. Here is a picture of the airport.

That said, here is a correct picture of the southern end of the island. The question still stands, see the WWII fighter strip?

The weather certainly has been weird this past week.
Did my XC check out yesterday in a battered old 172 and ended up shooting an approach to minimums with only a single NAV/COM...no GPS.
But, it was great learning operating out of class B.
Had to get up to speed on all the DPs and STARs.
Also, saw some humpback whales...that was pretty cool.
Weather permitting, will be flying today and tomorrow.

Looks like you had a great time. When are you going back?
I’d love to come back, but as with all things in life, not sure if I ever will. That’s why I’m glad I did it!

Never say never. Now that we're retired we go to Hawaii twice a year. Among other places around the world. Your time will come. :D
