They say lead in our fuel is bad. Well, now we can cash in on years of lead deposits in our engines to afford the maintenance on our planes. With the recent idea someone brought up about reusing oil, i think flying is finally becoming affordable.

Lead into gold is neat, but it would completely tank the gold economy if it could be made for less than the price to extract it.
Isn't that tautological? If the price of production goes down, then the price of gold would obviously go down?

I could've used better words - a lot of other things are tied to gold prices. If gold tanks, it will drag a substantial part of the global economy down with it.

I figured out the philosopher’s stone years ago … ;) (not technically gold, but color and corrosion resistance are the same, weight is very close, and mechanical properties are vastly improved).

Even at that, the global gold value is only about 10% of the global GDP for a single year. Even if (and, of course, this won't happen) gold became valueless overnight, it would be a shock to the system that was quickly absorbed. For example, there isn't a single currency still tied to gold. The "other things tied to gold price" would get tied to something else before lunch.

The value of the panic largely exceeds the value of the commodity. Isn't that how the great depression started, people panicking?

and thought you were selling the plane.

Barring anything catastrophic, that won't happen.

Obviously, the post itself was more of a joke but now real talk: When they started making lab diamonds, did that tank the diamond market? I don't follow those markets so I have no idea.

Yeah, we can't rule that out completely I suppose. But I think it's more fair to say the great depression didn't start because people baselessly panicked, but because people realized that huge sections of the national economy were houses of cards, which caused the panic. Gold itself is kind of a house of cards, only propped up by speculation (i.e. the speculative value is much greater than the industrial value). But in our thought experiment it would be the only thing that zeros out overnight. The rest of the economy would still be chugging along fine and my guess is that the shock would be absorbed quickly.

Look at it this way, bitcoin is valued at about 2% of the global GDP. Do we really think that if quantum computing rendered the blockchain obsolete this weekend that there would be a global impact?

Natural diamond prices are feeling the effect of artificial diamonds being available in volume at gemstone quality and lower prices, yes.

A wise man once said:

“A thousand men, say, go searchin' for gold. After six months, one of them's lucky: one out of a thousand. His find represents not only his own labor, but that of nine hundred and ninety-nine others to boot. That's six thousand months, five hundred years, scramblin' over a mountain, goin' hungry and thirsty. An ounce of gold, mister, is worth what it is because of the human labor that went into the findin' and the gettin' of it.”

Aluminum bronze with a couple trace additives, relatively cheap ingredients and great physical properties for bearings (though it does have some quirks that must be factored in for when casting it).
