Favorite eatery?

NOOO! I had plans to head out there based upon the recommendations from this thread. Looks like they have the new location they're moving to on their website. It's about 4.2 miles away from the airport.

Thanks for recommending Maniac Mikes at Cable... I'll have to give them a try.

You'll like Maniac Mikes! The whole airport is a cool little 1950s' throwback kinda place. The transient parking is on a bit of a downslope, so either bring wheel chocks, or use the angle-iron ones they provide, on a rack at the base of the tetrahedron. Try the Cropduster for breakfast....eggs, bacon and French toast.

Ice Cream: Andy's Custard
Andy (Kuntz) was my next door neighbor when I lived in Springfield from '04 to '08 and is the President of the company. He's a freakin' idiot.

Mommy (Carol) started/built the business when he was a wee lad and named it after him. He couldn't manage his way out of a box and it's a good thing others (including Carol) are around to handle business that needs handled.

They do have some good product though.

Hey mscard. you're in 'Bama, have you been to Big Bob Gibsons? I used to fly in to DCU, grab a crew car, and go hit the one on 6th ave. Pretty good BBQ!

I haven't as I don't get up that way often. But Gibson's usually voted for Best BBQ in Alabama every year, always at least in the top 5. But it's on my list to try. One thing Alabama does not lack is good BBQ.
