Just had a text from Fast Eddie’s wife Karen. She said he’s starting to wake up from this morning’s heart surgery. The surgeon said everything went very well and his vital signs are where they expect them to be. He’ll be in quite a bit of pain, but they can control that. He’ll probably stay in ICU for a day or so, then have several more days in the hospital.

I’ll provide updates as I receive them.

Overall it seems to have gone as planned, so Eddie’s Sky Arrow probably won’t come on the market anytime soon. ;)

:happydance:

Hoping for a quick recovery, glad he’s on the mend.

Thanks for the update @Half Fast! A welcome ray of sunshine this news is. My best wishes to Eddie on a speedy recovery.

Good to hear all went well, back in the air soon I hope.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear it.

UPDATE

Just had a text from Karen. Surgeon gave her good reports. He’ll be in ICU for at least 1 or 2 more days, then at least 2 more days in a regular room. He had his first walk around the hallway a little while ago. Right now, his heart rhythm is being maintained by a pacemaker and the plan is to wean him off of it, but that won’t be known for several days.

Overall he’s progressing well. Heart is about 24 hours SMOH now, so a few more hours running Aeroshell straight 100 should finish the break-in.

Did they go in for an iran and just decided to go for the major?

at least this overhaul is covered by insurance!

Seriously though, glad to hear he’s doing well!

Latest text from Karen said he had a rough night last night, but is still doing okay. Not surprising for him to have some rough spots as his body works off the remains of anesthesia and the docs try to get the painkillers right, etc. Eddie's daughter is there, too, and is spelling Karen so she can get some rest.

He's at UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Any POAers in the vicinity?

Eddie, glad you’re recovering well. Hopefully they gave you a cough pillow, keep that thing nearby for a while!

@fasteddie because you're on meds it's perfectly acceptable to be a lil raunchy with your nurses. I think that's in the hospital rulebook.

OUTSTANDING! Rest up and get your strength back. Glad you’re doing well.

Update…

Today is two weeks post-surgery and one week since getting home. I seem to be doing pretty well - today I walked just over a mile, keeping my heart rate below 120. Felt a new kinship with my bovine friends, with whom I cowmmisserated.

Cardiac rehab has been recommended, but generally starts 30 days post-op. I think I’m safe walking, as long as I don’t push it. I did end up with a pacemaker. My understanding is the valve replacement surgery is right where an important nerve bundle connects two nodes that control the timing of contractions, so inflammation can sometimes interfere. Better safe than sorry.

Biggest annoyance now is still not being able drive for another couple of weeks, plus the prohibition on lifting more than 10 lbs for another 2 1/2 months. But this too shall pass.

Glad to have all the support I’ve been getting from friends, family, and the folks here. Thanks again!

I am very pleased to see you outside, fresh air is hard to beat for improved moral!

You seem to be wisely walking with another person. In the early months, being alone has some hazard.

As an old geezer, I have several friends who have pacemakers, and they all said that the early months were somewhat unpredictable for sudden weakness.

So happy to see you up and about. Heal up quick!

This is great news. Awesome to see you walking around. I'm smiling at wanting to drive, it's so much better to feel able to do something that you can't yet than not feeling like you can do anything. Hope things continue to get better for you.

Well they didn’t say you couldn’t ride one of the motorcycles, did they?
My dad was diagnosed with multiple occlusions in his coronary arteries at 69.

He was having some tree work done and they set a limb on the roof and cracked some rafters and broke out two rooms of plaster ceiling.

I called to check on him and he was crawling around the attic to see how bad the damage was. I suggested that the Dr would not approve. He replied that “He didn’t tell me not to.” I suggested it might not have occurred to the Dr to tell a 69 year old with a heart condition to stay out of the attic.

He did survive and after double bypass surgery was very fit for another decade.

Today is Liberation Day - 30 days post-surgery. Significant in that I can now drive again! Between my friend coming up from Tallahassee, another coming down from Indiana and my daughter coming up from near Tampa, I made all my numerous appointments, but it will be great getting back behind the wheel!

I feel like I’m about 95% recovered, capable of walking two miles in hilly terrain. I see my surgeon Tuesday and she may recommend cardiac rehab. I’ll start it and see if it’s really necessary going forward.

Anyway, to reiterate, the whole ordeal was less horrible than I had imagined. The hospital stay was certainly unpleasant, mainly in that it was very hard to get comfortable between the hospital bed and the recliner, what with all the tubes and wires and monitors they had me hooked up to. But there was nowhere near the level of pain I had worked myself up over.

Now, just two more months on blood thinners and limits on lifting. But by spring I’ll be hot to trot! Yay!

Simply liking this isn't enough. This is fantastic news and I hope 30 days has flown by as fast for you as it has me. Can't believe it's been 30 days already.
