The Mayan calendar claims to know the end of the earth is coming December 21st.

How are you preparing?

Seriously, I think they got it right this time, I mean in my life I can remember 3 times people have predicted the end of the earth. But this time they have proof.

I'm gonna party like a rock star. (Not like I need an excuse.). Party time!

What about leap year? Did the myans factor that in too? :stirpot:

12th? Or 21st? Typo in first post?

As they said on Wait, Wait this week...

I'm not sure what's going to happen on the 21st but there's going to be a lot of surprised Mayans doing last minute Christmas shopping on the 22nd.

I skipped all my payments for December. Why would anyone continue to pay on something after the end of the world? :dunno:

Don't worry about it. They never specify a time zone with these things so just check every morning for the next two weeks if Australia is still around. If yes, don't worry. If no, you have 24 hours. Make the most of it.

The whole problem with the end of the world thing is that everyone keeps forgetting to tell the world that it's supposed to end.

What really happened was the guy who was writing out the calendar finally said "screw this, 3500 years is good enough, I'm going to lunch." Then the guy who came in later to continue the calendar said "oh sheesh, who needs to keep chiseling this into stone, let someone else do it 3500 yeas from now." And nobody every got around to writing out the next year...

I'm sorta suspicious this could be a somewhat successful "wag the dog" concoction...

At least it's keeping certain cable channels and documentary film crews busy...

Sounds like we all recognize this Mayan calendar nonsense for what it is. Unfortunately there are growing liklihoods for other less-catastrophic scenarios. Check this out:

each local community to foster the capability of providing at least 20 percent of its own critical needs such as local power generation, food, and water

That's absolutely hilarious. I want to see NYC, or any city for that matter, be able to supply 20% of the food supply needed to feed the bazillion people that live there with zero agriculture land available.

I see 11:11 UTC

We decided to take it *seriously.*
At our house, we will be:
grilling steaks WITHOUT REGARD To HIGH CHOLESTEROL.
eating potato chips, cheetos, marshmallows,
putting lots of butter on baked potatoes,
sitting in the sun without sunscreen,
driving to refill our pantry without seatbelts and child restraint seats, texting and talking on the phone.
We will be drinking 20 oz sodas and belching a lot, I'd imagine.
Our friends that smoke say they will go to restaurants and smoke while they eat
and
we have neighbors that intend to go to Disney World and order alcoholic beverages in the Magic Kingdom.
It will be a very busy day.

My family is due at our place on the 22nd for Christmas. First time we've hosted the event at our house, I believe.

I'm not sure how I feel about the issue. :)

Seriously, though... this is an even bigger pile of BS than the whole Y2K thing. At least there was a chance of a few application programs misbehaving after that. This time... I personally guarantee that there will be absolutely no difference whatsoever from the 21st to the 23rd, aside from a few sheepish people who fell for the con, and of course a hole new crop of end-of-the-world predictions.

And thousands of 12 and 13 year old generators that have never been out of the box will just be another year older.

Probably will be nothing, though apparently other references to this date have been popping up as the start of a new age.

End of the age parties scheduled for Thursday and Friday (just in case the Friday one comes too late), where gluttony will star.

Hooey it is. However I did buy extra water and groceries and have made a mental checklist of where all the hand tools/weapons are in the house

Just more evidence that we need to seriously limit Congressional sessions. I think maybe 30 days / year would be about right. Our elected officials have too much time on their hands, and too little gray matter between their ears. That's a dangerous combination.

I asked one of the local wingnuts who had a table about the end of the world at the farmers market [and where would one expect liberals to be lying in wait for the unsuspecting?] and asked him: "Does the prediction for Dec 21 include the adjustments made in the 18th century for the differences between the Gregorian and the Julian calendar?"

The blank, clueless stare was absolutely precious. Then he started trying to convince me why oil companies were behind the obestiy epidemic because we all eat too much meat because they need to sell their fertilizer so they can get us to eat meat . . . I didn't get the gist of it but he sure was earnest about it. . . .

I wanted to ask him why he cared about the oil companies and meat if the world was going to end next month but that kind of inquiry probably would have fried what was left of his logic circuits . . .

I have asked what time on the 21st the world is going to end - and they on't know. So I ask them is it 0001UTC, and if so how did the Mayans know about Universal Time? Or perhaps its 0001 at the international date line on the 21st? Or perhaps its high noon in Mayan land - which covers 2 time zones, so is it gonna end only on one side of the time zone? By this most people with a stitch of common sense are either laughing or too confused to understand, depending on their level of geographic knowledge. . . .

At least in Los Angeles 0001 21 Dec happens at 0401 - I'll be asleep when the world ends.

You'd think the Mayans would have predicted their own civilization's demise before worrying about the rest of the world.

Yes they did. The calendar ends on the Winter Solstice, which happens on December 21 this year...leap years and all.

Know any Mayans? Better ask them.
"No one expects the Spanish Inquisition".

My Mother-in-law will be going in for surgery on the 21st, so I'll be in a hospital if the fit hits the shan.

NYC could easily have vertical farms, and they are next to NJ with some of the best vegetable farms in the country.

This is why I am not buying the wife anything for Christmas. Boy will she be surprised!!!

I guess it really doesn't matter, because (not to be too much of a downer) the end of the world could come for any one of us tonight, tomorrow or very soon. It is all relative. Life is about the journey.

If the Mayans were so smart and could predict the future why didn't they know the Spanish were inquisioning? :dunno:

The Mayans have just released their 2013 calendars. This one's titled "The girls of Chichen Itza. Bunch of scantily clothed partially obese women climbing steep stairs.
