Electric assist biking

I'm worried that the people that use ebikes like motorcycles will ruin it for the rest of us...I've seen people just holding the throttle down and going close to 30 mph way too close to pedestrians.
Legally, ebikes are engineered not to exceed 20mph on throttle alone and the assist cuts out at 28mph if you're pedaling. I've hit 45mph going downhill on a non-ebike and sprinted to 30mph on flat ground and I consider myself to be a mediocre cyclist.

Heck I hit 45 mph doing downhill on a gravel bike on Saturday - it only takes some smooth roads.
@Dana if you're uncomfortable with the pedal cadence required it's probably a good sign you're going fast enough ;)
Somehow the law managed to treat mopeds properly, and they have pedals, so.... hope springs eternal.
@asicer don't sell yourself short; the sprint speed mediocrity curve has lots of cofounders - headwind/leadout, etc ;)

I did a bike touring class a few years back on a recumbent with a one-wheeled trailer. Going downhill on a gravel road, I feathered the front brakes at the wrong time and started an oscillation that I couldn’t stop. Probably got over 25 mph while dragging both feet, barely staying between the ditches.

That really sucks. "I'm about to crash" is an absolutely horrible feeling on a bike. I had an early model (pre 2010?) Cervelo R3 that wobbled like it was trying to kill me every time I went over 40; even with the top tube clamped between my knees - I declared it unridable and moved on.

Did a ride with my wife today…15 miles, I was mostly in level 2 assist, maybe 15% of the ride in level 3. A good ride together, and both of us got the workout we wanted.

And I’m showing improvement…battery still showed 100% after this ride.

Always like hearing about good bike rides!

That's a long, long ass day on the bike. Did you eat enough?
Tried to, lots of gummies and such, as well as loading up in sugary drinks at store stops. Hard to take in enough carbs on a ride lkke that.

Definitely a heroic day out. Try for 1 gram of carbohydrate per kg per hour. Six plus hours you obviously can't carry that much, and tolerance for sweets seems to drop after hours and hours of the same.
Staying on top of your nutrition definitely helps with recovery though.

Thanks, it was basically three decent climbs with several small hills and stingers in between. I was really good until mile 70, that last climb smoked me.

Gearing up for a 94 miler tomorrow with about 5000 elevation. Several of us are training up to do the Triple Bypass in July.

The triple is a legend! Go get it. Not sure my ass would survive a 6+ hour ride, let alone what the Triple B requires. You'll definitely be enjoying the benefits of your long rides come July. Now is the definitely the time to figure out what your gut can manage on those long days.

I'm seeing a bit of progress myself after a few too many years away.

Oh I don't know about that. Given your history, Max would have you ready in no time.

...How’s the Ironman prep going?
Only signed up for IM NC 70.3 this year. The plan is to race IM FL in 2026 with Max coaching.

Just booked my flight to IM world championship to cheer on my daughter!

Edit: fixed the dangling preposition. I don't want to inspire another @eman1200 grammer thread.

Today: 54mi, 3000ft, 16.4 mph. Good day!
Nice work! I'm jealous; taking a couple of rest days then it'll be rollers for me until the rain stops later in the week.

Had to resort to the rollers (!) today. Can't even remember the last time I had to do that.
