KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A service dog had to go. And go again. And by the time the dog was done relieving himself, the noxious smell forced a passenger jet to make an unscheduled stop at Kansas City International Airport for a cleanup on aisle one.

The U.S. Airways flight had been delayed for about two hours in Los Angeles. When the plane finally pushed back and took off for Philadelphia, the passengers settled in for what they hoped would be a routine flight.

Instead, some passengers woke from a sound sleep to a horrible smell.

"About an hour into the flight, I started smelling this terrible smell. I look up the aisleway and there's a dog pooping right in the middle of the aisle. It's a big dog, 3' to 4' tall or long, and he was just going," passenger Steve McCall told Inside Edition, which airs at 6:30 p.m. on KCTV5.

Passengers took to Twitter to share the well, crappy details.

Passenger Chris Law took pictures and tweeted: "So the full-sized dog that's on my flight, well it did what dogs do & went to the bathroom when it felt like it smack dab in the middle of aisle."

The crew did their best to clean up the mess. An hour later, the smells lingered in the cabin. And the dog had to go again.

"An hour later, it still smelled bad, and after they cleaned it all up, it pooped again!" McCall told Inside Edition.

That pushed some passengers over the edge.

"A couple of people started dry-heaving, a couple of people were throwing up," McCall said.

Another passenger tweeted: "Can't make this up. The dog has now (blanked) twice."

The crew again frantically tried to clean up the dog's mess, but ran out of paper towels.

The pilot decided to divert to Kansas City International Airport for an *ahem* pit stop for ground crews to clean up and for the doggie to take a more routine potty break.

The dog's owner was truly remorseful, passengers said.

McCall said, "She said, 'Hey, so sorry, I want to get all your addresses so I can give you a Starbucks gift card.'"

KCI spokesman Joe McBride told KCTV5 that the May 28 flight was not an emergency landing.

The plane eventually made its way to Philly.

"This is the most unique flight experience I've ever had!" McCall said.

Poor dog. That's a long time to hold it. At least it was a service dog. Another article that I read about this didn't mention that, so I presumed that it was some old lady's yippy little puss dog.

Just hope its a real service dog. Recently there seems to be some expansion of the concept to dogs that are more of a pet and may not have true service-dog training.

'recently'? I flew in 2000 and back then a service animal was defined in the book as any animal the passenger says is a service animal that can be safely transported in the PICs judgement. Service fish? sure. Service ants? If the PIC is okay with it. Service donkey? Won't fit so it's out.

Exactly; we are seeing a huge surge in folks wanting their pets certified as 'Service Animals' so they can take them everywhere they want without restriction. Maybe some of these 'emotional support pets' etc are truly needed but I have to suspect in a lot of cases it's simply folks wanting their dog by their side 24/7....and I have to wonder if some of it isn't attention-getting behavior. We need one nationally-recognized certification agency that validates the owner's condition and need, and verifies the animal's training. Right now it is a free-for-all.

Terrible situation and poor planning, but kudos to the owners response (if he follows through with "trying to make it up to the pax)

I truly believe that most service dogs serve vitally important functions:

Full Definition of SENSE OF HUMOR

: the faculty of perceiving and appreciating the humorous; sometimes : addiction to buffoonery and witticisms <has a great sense of humor —always kidding>

So basically, the law being what it is, the dog had to be allowed on the airplane.

However, I'm not aware of anything in the ADA that precludes litigation to recover the costs for the diversion and cleaning, or for the pax to recover any costs related to missed connections and so forth stemming from the delay.

Rights come with responsibilities. So as far as I'm concerned, if an operator is compelled to carry someone's orangutan in the passenger cabin because its human insists on his or her right to declare it a service animal needed to help them deal with their fear of clouds, then that human should also be held responsible any costs resulting from the orangutan's actions.

Yet service revolvers are banned. As happiness is a warm gun I know how emotionally damaging it is to walk around 'naked'.

Absolutely. You can probably have a "service animal" to reduce your anxiety for not having a service animal. It just takes a note from a counselor. There should be well defined indications and qualifications for these critters. The owners should be held strictly liable and should be required to carry liability insurance for any problems caused by the animal.

+1. I'm embarrassed to say I have a friend who travels a lot and had her dog certified as a service animal just so she could fly with it. Big dog, too... yellow lab. I love animals but this to me is selfish and pathetic.

I have a couple of friends that did the exact same thing with their yellow lab, the dog was a wonderful, well behaved dog. They had no kids and this was their baby. His brother is an airline pilot and told him about getting the dog certified as a service animal and they did, she only flew a few times with them, but she could go on the beach and into restaurants, just about anywhere they wanted to take her.:dunno:

The "service animal" owner in this case should be required to buy each passenger on that flight a first class ticket for the same route and reimburse the airline for diversion and clean up expenses before she ever allowed to fly on another commercial airline flight. If she is not fabulously wealthy that means she will be taking the bus in the future.

Did you fail to see the humor of my post? See, you posted a cartoon of a blind man skydiving with a dog. On topic and funny I admit. But I saw a new angle to the cartoon and shared my observation that in saving the dog the dog will likely die. That's irony and is a funny take I'm sure many missed including the cartoonist.

It's admittedly not as funny when you have to explain it, but the fact you chose to post the definition of the word 'joke' lecturing me as a result of you missing a joke is in itself pretty ironic and funny.

Sorry, but I failed to see the humor...and still do...probably because it was so obvious.

A few weeks ago I heard an airliner ask to divert into Denver. When ATC asked if it was an emergency or if they needed any assistance they said, "Negative, the lav is overflowing." That inspired some different remarks on the frequency.

Whatsa matter Tim? Do you HAVE to hate everything I write? Have a sense of humor.

Well, this is why before my flights the dogs aren't supposed to be given food or water. What's not in won't come out.

Can only imagine what an airliner would look like after our yellow lab deposited hair on every square inch of the carpet and seats.

I'm sure they have to stay on the floor, but as the owner of a Chocolate lab and a former frequent flyer, I'll gladly take whatever a lab leaves vs what some of the two legged pigs leave in an airliner.

I was on a business trip (unfortunately to Orlando, and all that that implies) and there was a delay pushing back from the gate. A woman across isle had a boy who was old enough to stand and walk around, but still wore a diaper.

I know he wore a diaper, because his pig of a mother commenced to change his ****-filled diaper right there on the seat, and put the ****ty diaper on a tray table next to her. That plane smelled like human feces for a good hour.

I hate people. I love my dogs.

I've seen parents change diapers on restaurants tables and leave the diaper right there.

We have always taken our dogs on our plane, very few incidents, so far! :D
Once, we had a weather delay at our home FBO, the dogs normally "go" when we park the car, lots of grass, then walk down to the lobby. Well, a big clap of thunder broke as we exited the car, so everyone bolted inside, no potty time. Anyway, the Golden was scared of the weather and kept panting, the helpful line guys thought she was hot and gave her two bowls of water. The weather cleared, we jumped in and headed for the beach! About halfway the Golden started getting antsy, real antsy, coming into the cockpit, moving around a lot, she normally sleeps! When we landed, she ran for the grass and almost started a flood! :D
