Good grief. I came across this final report synopsis report link on a fatal Ercoupe crash and the full download report is even worse than the summary. What a shame for the potential buyer student pilot. His experience ties in with the discussion about what students know or don't know in this thread Lawsuit Thread . I'd post the full report but don't know how to from my download folder. It's a disturbing read.

More directly, it ties in with all those family and friends who trust the pilot to be proficient and follow the regs without knowing the difference, like in this thread:

Thus another reason I don't get in other people's airplanes.

When I took my nervous BIL up for a $100 burger flight I took great pains to brief him that the yoke was NOT a hand-hold in case of turbulence. None was expected but... None was experienced and he said the flight was enjoyable.

"Further, although the fuel load at the start of the flight could not be determined, based on the reported weights of the pilot and passenger, any usable fuel amount greater than about 1.9 gallons would result in the airplane being over maximum gross weight."

This is nuts! I'm reminded of a young man I recently took for a Young Eagles flight. Shortly after lift off he asked if the airplane used gasoline to fly. "Sure does" I told him. He quickly asked, "is it full?"

The seller lied to the buyer; the plane was 16 years out of annual. The seller also didn't make sure the buyer was strapped in. So many things wrong here.
I'm calculating the seller's insurance coverage to be zero dollars. I hope he had something of an estate.

The seller wasn't competent, capable, or qualified to make the flight. And it seems like he subscribed to the, "I shouldn't have to explain how a seatbelt works," school of thought. Very unlikely he had insurance on an airplane that really shouldn't have been flying, or that the terms were complied with if he did.

Yeah, my insurance (Avemco Renters, sold my plane) specifically says I must have the appropriate medical and current flight review, or no coverage. So even if he had it, he didn't.
