The Daylight Savings time change occurs soon. Originally installed when we were more of an industrial society than a technological one, it has me wondering if the need to shift our clocks and daily routines twice a year is still relevant.

Your thoughts?

Outdated . Poor kids get home and bareful can play outside. At least those that play outside anymore. I'd prefer daylight savings year round.

It's absolutely not relevant and we should cancel the whole deal. But, we should also realign the time zones so that we effectively stay on DST year-round. I'd actually be a proponent of "reverse" DST, meaning set the set the clocks ahead in the fall and then back in the spring instead of the way we do it now.

I've heard the "but kids will be waiting for the bus in the dark" argument, but it doesn't hold water. My kid is already waiting for the bus in the dark for a couple months a year given the current system.

I vote for your system

I vote for DST year round. Never understood why Arizona doesn't observe it, anybody know why?

Think there's part of IN or IL that don't either.

Heat. Interesting thing is you can travel through Arizona during Daylight savings time and go through four time changes. The Navajo nation observes it but the Hopi don't. The Hopi nation is surrounded by the Navajo nation.

Less annual effect on daylight hours in southern states. Hawaii doesn't either.

DST does have a use. It makes it easier to pop in a bay tour after work.

Call your Representatives and start a WH petition. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Trump should make that one of the regulations to eliminate!

DST all the time, I like some daylight after working hours to enjoy the evenings.

Apparently the states have the right to not recognize DST, but they can't go to DST all the time, without an act of congress. Strange law. I would rather keep what we have (DST) than lose that extra hour of light in the summer. I would go for DST all the time, but I don't think congress has it in them to get that through.

I really f***** hate the switch back and forth. But it's 'standard time' that I hate. I would much prefer permanent DST. I really get depressed when I have to drive to work AND home in the dark in the winter time.

....and there used to be a time, I remember when I was growing up, many businesses would have different summer and winter hours, solely for the purpose of defeating the switch between standard and daylight savings time. In fact I refuse to set my manually settable clocks to standard time as a protest.

Because Arizona is filled with highly intelligent people.

Go to Phoenix in the summertime, wake up early, and see how many people are out running at sunup...it allows outside activities in daylight before it gets too hot to survive them.

If we went to DST all the time how would we store all that saved daylight time?

Yes, I like it, but I also happen to think that we should "Spring Forward" on Friday at 3pm and "Fall Back" on Sunday at 3am.

Phoenix can't be allowed to hold the rest of the country hostage over DST.

I don't want to get up at 4am when the sun does - 5am is bad enough M/J/J -

Around here, the kids wait for the bus in their houses, and the %#$%@! bus stops every 100'.

It was never relevant.
The government originally claimed that it helps farmers in the summer when they have to get up early in the morning.
If you ask any farmer, he'll tell you that he doesn't get up when the government says it's time, he gets up when the cows wake up and need milking and feeding.

Putin put a stop to it and eliminate DST. Too bad he "eliminated" it by standardizing on it. :D *rolleyes*

Actually, no, it was put in during the war years to conserve electricity and ensure people could get their work done in the day.

It's one of those ideas that has outlived whatever usefulness it may have had but is too hard to do anything about. If Congress got wrapped up in this, they'd not have time for anything else. WAIT! What a good idea!

I suggest they start immediately on repealing Obamatime, oops, DST, and making Esperanto the official language for Federal Regulations involving Aviation. That will keep them occupied on harmless things since the FAR's are unintelligible already.

Cheers

Arizona is the odd one. Because of the different times within the state, I just tell the other end I will be there in 1 1/2 hours instead of trying to tell them what time I will be there.

Benjamin Franklin came up with one idea of DST to reduce the usage of candles.

And if you are really bored..... https://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/history.html

I hate DST, I wish we'd go the other way but apparently my biological clock is way out of sync with everyone else's. If I don't force myself up with alarms and try to force myself to sleep my body will naturally want me to go to bed between 1 and 4am and wake up between 8 and 11am. The real problem here is, while it's easy to force myself up(set the alarm clock and just do it) it's nearly impossible to force myself to go to bed at a certain time. So when I used to be on a regular work schedule, during the DST part of the year I just got up earlier than my body wanted to every morning(and felt like crap) and didn't catch up on sleep until the weekend. Every year when we went off DST it was such a relief, the work schedule was closer to my natural schedule so it was easier.

I know some folks like to schedule/do things really early in the morning to get it out of the way but every time it's something I have to be involved in it sucks. I get up early, I won't feel rested, I'll feel like crap for the rest of the day. OTOH I seem to get this huge energy jump around 9-10pm and have been known to start major projects like painting a room or something while my wife is asleep. Is it just me?

In the winter is when we really need the extra hour.

I thought it was when we were primarily an agrarian society..

That said I spend time in Hawaii and Phoenix and they don't change seems to work for me. I would prefer the we just get rid of it all together.. it is a pain on the butt

I like it when people have time to get off of work at 5PM, and get to the airport for sunset photos by 9PM. Tends to get tricky when I have to be in the air by 4:30 for a 5PM sunset!

Time is just a number on a dial. Rather than changing clocks, why not just shift our life an hour or two based on the seasons? No law says you have to work 9am-5pm.

Exactly.

or everyone on earth could just use GMT :)

i know i know, all the tiny brains would explode :D

I think everyone should be on the same time. like when it is noon in Texas it should be noon in Australia..... then no one would make mistakes trying to figure out time zone differences....

Not only that but a random one. There is no reason why a day has to be 24 hours. It's just been that way for centuries. Same for the number of degrees in a circle. You could make a day 100 hours and circle 100 degrees. Then you could tell what time it was at any location based on longitude.

A day is still a day though, slice it up in whatever way you want it's still the same amount of time for the earth to make a rotation. If people don't like schedules they should change their schedule, there's no reason why we need to mess with the measurement.
