Dan Gryder banned from Airventure

I don't have a dog in this argument, but I did grow up in a town where if one of the bulbs in the single stop light in town went out, the paper would print it.

When I was about 5, I wondered how the news was exactly 30 minutes every day, if they talked about all the important stuff each day, and why each daily newspaper was similarly always the same size. Well, it's because it's not all the news that fit to print, it's whatever they can come up with to sell newspapers. That hasn't changed in 200 years. If you live in a small town, you get small news. If you live in a big city, you really also get small news, but it's about people that are thought to be big.

All this coming from someone that pretty much stopped watching the news 30 years ago when I started a business, and haven't looked back. One of the best decisions I've ever made. It saves time and reduces stress, and I'm not a bit the worse off in any way. If it's important enough, somebody will tell you.

You really think most daily newspapers in a medium sized or larger city is publishing all the arrests?

And before you make a fool of yourself,
The Miami Herald does not print comprehensive lists of individual arrests in the newspaper.
While arrest information is public record in Florida, the paper's crime coverage is focused on notable or significant cases, not routine arrest log.

Orlando Sentinel does not print all arrest reports. Like other major news outlets, it makes editorial decisions about which arrests to cover based on journalistic standards, not because it has a policy to publish every single one.

As of late 2025, the Green Bay Press-Gazette and other newspapers generally do not publish a comprehensive, daily list of all local arrests.

The Selma Times-JournaL,
the main newspaper for Selma, Alabama, does not regularly publish a detailed list or "police blotter" of every local arrest. Instead, it typically reports on significant or high-profile law enforcement actions.
Keep doubling down baby.

When I was growing up, I lived in such a small town the newspaper used to print every single call that the police or fire department responded to, including the false alarms! That stopped when a bigger company bought out the town paper in my teens, but it definitely was interesting reading for kid me.

Our local paper used to print all the police calls, and the names of those arrested. It tended to be the same people over and over again, and a small enough population that you often knew or knew of the people. Later, they started redacting the names so it was just "a Clinton man was arrested for...", which took a lot of the fun out of it.

But Dan Gryder is a notable, and should be fully reported, just as anybody that crashes a plane becomes a notable somebody for Gryder to report on.

When I was a teenager in Washington DC, I delivered a major paper that set aside the same [age every day for all the news that was NOT fit to print. That is not a small town. The Washington Post bought them, and faded that page out.

It is alleged Gryder was in a 152 that crashed and he reported on that. I can’t recall if he admitted being in the airplane at the time he released the video, but there were multiple, credible witnesses that observed it. IIRC, it happened at one of the ACCA events.

If you’re not aware of what ACCA is, it’s an award DG created to recognize aviation content creators, kind of like an Golden Globe type event. I think he gave himself an award there.

Maybe BrYan with a Y can remind us…he was there.

"Alleged"? I've never seen anyone allege differently, although he did refuse to cooperate with the NTSB's investigation. I didn't think he even denied that he was flying; he just disputed the NTSB's conclusion that there was nothing wrong with the airplane before the crash.

Yeah, I don't recall him denying it either. FWIW, I was there also. One of the first across the field not knowing what we would find. Saw the whole thing as it happened. Was glad no one was hurt. Seemed like there were better options.

When I was a young 'un, my mother had a gossip-happy harpy for a friend. She called the house once, and when I answered, said something nasty along the lines of "Well, look what YOU did to get in the paper!"

I, quite honestly, had no idea what she was talking about. Told her that, and she got all embarrassed and said goodbye.

Of COURSE I had to look in the paper. And there was my name, in a big list of other folks who had gotten speeding tickets.....

He was filming himself in front of the wreaked plane moments after it happened. Talking to responders like a fighter pilot / hero "There I was..." Basically a bunch of "I saved the day" rhetoric. In fairness, possibly his skillset did reduce the impact of the situation that it also created. In hindsight, Rock the Ramp would have been a better use of everyone's time but this was back when it still seemed like he cared about aviation safety. Spoiler Alert, It's a ruse.

I'm in the camp that 'ol DG is motivated by the ego boost, within the general lack of direction he deals with in late middle age. Could even be boredom taken to an unproductive direction. Knowing how little money there is in this [aviation] space for online monetization compared to others, and the incomes people I know make from their main occupation compared to their almost-full time uboob footprint, a former airline guy like DG isn't floating his lifestyle on uboob grift, especially the relatively low-rent earning and heavily-diluted online aviation space. It's all internet slop by and large, the higher the sub counts rises.

I hate online grifters, it's the reason I don't support any of them. They're professional chamaleons. One of the more sobering life lessons I found out after I left high school was that in the adult world, nobody means what they say, and nobody says what they mean. Transactional fakery rules the roost. My own naive penchant for embracing "liar liar" syndrome in professional life has not helped my career, could even be argued as responsible for my present job/family dislocation. I still value that about myself, even if it costs me lifetime money.

All to say I sincerely believe this isn't about money, this is about social currency in the little big pond of american GA social media circles, for ol danny boy. I take his relative recalcitrance and tenor in public and online to be sincere. It may be careless and flippant to a fault, but it's not a manufactured, quick-to-weathervane aNalYtics-chasing like more prominent political content peddlers on the boob and elsewhere. In short, it's not a grift.

Yes, of course most people who find him odious will find this tangent a distinction without difference. I stipulate, no dog in that fight. Just wanted to clarify I don't find him a grifter proper, and since we're in the pedants of america board after all, was a relevant semantics sidebar. Now back to our regular playa hata programming.

The uboob grift is just the front to add "credibility" for the main grift.

Be honest, you haven’t read a newspaper in over 10 years. Otherwise you would have known newspapers quit publishing this stuff.
I love how you change the goalposts like nobody will notice. Hallmark of honesty that is.

Just like the it was always the same people in the newspaper police blotter, and DG just keeps getting into trouble, it's always the same people arguing on online forums.

It seems (though hard to follow) that DG may still have been subject to DV restraining order from 2023, which makes possession of the gun illegal regardless of his "stand your ground" argument and whether he was justified in assualting/brandishing as of the latest incident.

What would the punishment range be if that was true?

Didn’t that come out of Louisiana? If so, it may be possible Georgia has no official awareness that the TPO even exists.

Georgia also may not care enough to involve the feds for a Lautenberg enforcement action.

So you can’t admit you haven’t read a newspaper in the last decade. It’s not a sin, most people haven’t.

Where did the 10-year timeframe come from?

The discussion started when someone wrote, "Back when people still read newspapers..."

You responded, "You must have had a really imposing newspaper in your day".

You went from discussing what newspapers published in their heyday to what they publish in the last 10 years. You lost?

I actually read newspapers from a number of cities each week.

He stated newspapers have been posting arrest data for last 100 years. I just wanted to know if he actually has read a newspaper over the last decade to know what is in newspapers today.

The only newspapers I see today publishing arrests are the very small community weekly publications that people are not following online. Even most of those have ended to practice of publishing arrests.

I copied and pasted the quotes that started this "discussion," but of course that doesn't matter, you can just make up whatever quotes you want.
