On Dec. 29 I went out to bore some holes in the sky.
Says me: "Let's fly to Kline-Kill. I haven't been there for awhile and I want to play in the grass."
The first picture is just north of KPOU. Notice the total lack of snow.
The second picture is on final for Kline-Kill.

Who could possibly know there would be too much snow on the ground to land, just 55 mile north.
Certainly not me.

You may have dodged a little bit of a bullet there anyway? I love that field, but it can get a little wet and muddy from time to time. Green Acres is a little bumpier maybe, but I think it's generally drier.

Yes. Kline-Kill settles to lowlands and a stream, Green Acres bows up so the water runs to the ends. ;)
We lost a Cub at Kline-Kill a couple of years ago because of the mud.

Au revoir 2022. We had rain here yesterday, so the leftover moisture made for an unusually misty morning here in the desert.

Goodyear was reporting 5 miles visibility when I took off. On my way back about 45 minutes later GYR had gone IFR, 2 mile viz. I heard GYR tower issue a special VFR clearance to another inbound aircraft. Then the controller said, "We just checked and you're the first fixed-wing special VFR clearance we've had here in twenty years."

The pilot, in a very proper British dialect, said, "I'm choking up."

I called in from 15 miles out and requested SVFR, but by the time I got close to the Class D, the airport went VFR.

Not really spectacular photos, but we had about a 3 hour daylight break in the clouds. Had the entire Class D to myself for a half dozen T&Gs, then a trip around the airspace.

Around 2,500 AGL would almost lose sight of the ground, and could see the trailing edge of the departing front. Just checking out a local subdivision amongst the farm fields at 1,000 AGL.

Both of the last few times I’ve flown after the pre-Christmas subzero winter blast, the humid 40 degree weather had every plane and surface in the hangar covered in “sweat”. It’s easy to see how a sitting engine could suffer.

New Year's over the Salish Sea (between Washington State and Canada) and my tach showing I just crossed the 2,000.0 hour mark in my Maule

After 42 years I finally turned 2000hrs on my 172 in 2021. I have almost flown it a 1000 hours in the last 4 years. It had 1416 hrs when I started flying it in 2018.

The weather finally cleared a little bit the last couple days and I was able to get back in the air after work last night. I don't have any great pictures of mountains or deserts or anything like that but do get to enjoy midwest sunsets and calm clear skys once in a while. I still think to myself how lucky am I to do this after a long day/week at work.
There is some minor flooding from all the rains we have gotten recently. Nothing like California though. I didn't take off until 5:10 or so not much day light to fly in.

The DA was -1750 last night and my160hp motor thought/ran like it was a 360/180hp.
As soon as the sun set guess what popped up? It was so bright last night I was using my sun visor.
Been keeping an eye on this new airport in Galatin County KY and it does not appear to have changed much in the last month or so. 5500' of glorious concrete. Not sure when it will open?

Just my dog and I enjoying the evening.

After 2-3 weeks of IFR conditions, nasty fog and not seeing the sun, I was only too happy to go out and enjoy the perfect VFR skies :).
And it felt like about 2000 other GA pilots felt the same way, it was busy out there.

Landing SQI (Whiteside County). Camera just can't do it justice, it was a phenomenal, colorful sunset.

And the return trip. Gotta keep that night currency! Chicago O'Hare traffic visible in the distance on the left.

Always nice to see the sun when it's been gray and rainy all day. Got 3 approaches and a hold in today, so that pushes my currency out until June, and my proficiency until maybe next week some time :)

Trip to Grapevine Airstrip (88AZ) yesterday. Only 70 nm from the home drome, but a world away. The terrain colors were muted by the high overcast, but amazing nonetheless. 88AZ is maintained by volunteers from Arizona Pilots Association and Recreational Aviation Foundation in cooperation with USFS. APA holds monthly weekend camping fly-ins at 88AZ in the non-summer months.
