Wow good to hear no one was injured. Very fortunate the plane didn't hit the house.

Ran out of fuel in IMC.. Just ridiculous considering how many airports with an ILS system and GPS approaches he had to of passed over en-route.

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) - No injuries were reported from the site of a plane crash in Rowan County Friday afternoon.

The plane reportedly went down just before 3:45 p.m. on Westchester Drive in Kannapolis. Officials say a husband and wife were flying from Canada to Florida when they began running out of fuel.

The couple reportedly tried to stop several airports but couldn't. They eventually deployed a parachute that is built into the plane and floated to the ground in the middle of a neighborhood - landing in someone's yard.

The woman in the home told WBTV that she and her husband heard a loud "thud" then looked outside to see the plane in their yard. They helped the couple out of the plane and took them inside.

No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged,

So if your airplane parachutes into someone's yard like that do you buy them a bottle of champagne?

"The couple reportedly tried to stop several airports but couldn't."

Something special about the Cirrus? They developed something that prevents the airplane from landing?

Pilot is going to be sick when he realizes how close he was to an airport...1.5 miles to a grass strip.

I doubt that grass strip has a instrument approach.

Not a good past couple of months for Cirrus. What is this... the 3rd or 4th Cirrus that has experienced engine trouble or run out of fuel. Good news is that all had ballistic chute dpeloyments and occupants were unharmed.

Yep. But I lost the link to an excellent book about this (saved on my desktop) when I changed jobs.

Synopsis: technology reduces risk, so participants use riskier behavior to maintain the same risk level experienced with the older, les safe, technology.

Does "unable to land" mean "not instrument rated"? See risk homeostasis above . . .

Must of been cocain euphoria that led to the mismanagement of fuel.

It truly is a "helluva drug".

In the event of an emergency (as in running low on fuel) won't the G1000 drop you right on the runway with an instrument approach?
I know you have to hand fly the landing but visibility would have to be REALLY bad for that to not to be a primary option I would think (instrument rating or not).
That being said I'm glad they're alright.

That might be a Charlie rather than a Delta, which would be consistent with a flight route from Canada to the US.

Check the NTSB aviation accident database once in a while. You might learn something. Since Dec 1, 2015 there have been 16 fatal accidents, including Cessna, 140, 172, 182, and 208; a Bonanza, a Sierra; Piper 28, 32, and 46; a Rockwell 114; and a few others. Know what's not there? Cirrus.

Of course it is if you have an emergency. All the big talker cirrus bashers here, I bet if they were in an emergency and had a chute handle to pull they'd be pulling it while sobbing and begging for their mommies under their breath

There have been Cirrus pilots who crashed and died without pulling the chute handle. They are the ones who followed the advice of some here.

I do not have a Cirrus, never flown one, but don't understand all the hate.

The good news is that it's pretty difficult to hit a house... though they came close.

I've picked more than 1 off-field landing spot (in gliders) based on proximity to HVAC, swimming pools, and in pre-cell days, a landline. Fine job done here picking an easy spot to get rescued from!

Assuming they were clueless enough to run out of fuel, They probably couldn't hit that grass strip successfully with full tanks and CAVU.

If you are going to run out of fuel, it's good to have a parachute.

Good catch. Found a better picture on the net C-GXXJ, a Cirrus registered to a corporation in Ontario.
