Camshaft going flat

Takeoff and climb will be the most noticeable performance loss, cruise as well but not as dramatic. If you have an engine monitor you can see it IF you know what the EGT traces looked like when it was good, and then later notice that a pair of cylinders on intake lobe peak later than the others. Less valve lift = less air going into cylinder = richer mixture = later peak. That was the case for me, anyway, when my first intake lobe started losing metal. I don't know what they would show if an exhaust lobe went flat...

In a Lycoming you cannot see the cam with a borescope, unless you remove a cylinder first and then look through the borescope. :D

Well, my climb rate sucks! I guess I should pull a jug or two and take a look at the lobes. Time to buy/borrow a good Borescope. If we (the A&P and I) are careful we should be able to pull the cylinder out enough to get the probe in there without pulling it past the bottom ring/seal.

Much easier to just buy a cheap dial indicator and check the cam lift at the valve retainers...

25 bucks buys a inexpensive but accurate dial indicator and 10 bucks buys 4 new valve cover gaskets......

Too late, I already have the reusable silicone gaskets. :D

I'll add the dial indicator to my list.

Like I said in my post above, break the cylinder loose and move it out just enough to get the probe in there. Saves you having to deal with compressing the rings.

Jim

Oops, missed that! That would be a very reasonable way to check for spalling even before the cam loses some shape.

I ultimately measured valve lift before deciding to tear the engine down. I'll be getting the silicone gaskets when I put it back together.

The ring compressor tool for these cylinders is quite easy to use. I'd just pull them the whole way off if you go that far.
