If we have the engine opened up so that we can get a borescope in to examine the cam shaft, shouldn't there be an entry marked in the log books indicating as such? Should it be a worry if it wasn't entered, e.g. won't invalidate any insurance or anything like that?

I would certainly have the mechanic note that it was done (and condition was OK, let's hope); it has to be noted that the engine was disassembled to a degree necessary to get a scope in. Heck, changing the spark plugs requires a log entry.

If you R/R cylinders, then certainly a logbook entry would be appropriate IMO.

only if a maintenance action was performed....or there may not be a record.

I agree. If there were no major components removed to facilitate looking at the cam I wouldn’t expect to see an entry. Even if parts were removed and reinstalled there is nothing requiring a mechanic to document why the work was performed, just that it was.

Too many people, including many mechanics, do not understand what does and does not need to be documented in an aircraft logbook and how long those documents need to be retained. The FARs actually spell it out fairly well.
