Best X-country single engine plane for $250,000?

How many passengers?

Turbo 550ed lanceair with a loaded Skyview system and coupled AP.

Depends how much range/payload you need. One of my buddies has a Columbia 400 (aka Cessna 400/ttx), which are in that price range now, and he loves it. Regularly flies from NM to Socal in under 3 hours, but doesn't have to carry four either...

Downside on that airframe is, no FIKI.

My current ride. See caption.
Late model, great radios, long legs.
Will x-country with the best of them.

1/2 vote for the 210
1/2 vote for the some variant of the Bo. V35TC would work or a B36TC if you are a doctor.

For the long trips it's hard to beat The PA46 series. You can find a fair Malibu 310P for that price.

C310 so I can play Sky King, now where's that Penny slut?;)

Oh  ...you said SE. OK maybe a Pilatus if you can get one that cheap? Probably not. Lance or Saratoga then.

DC3/C47 opens up every grass strip along the way and PLENTY of room to bring along friends.

But it's not a single engine, nor is it under $250K if it's airworthy.

But a multi complex tailwheel IS a cool combination.

OOps, Sorry I revise my selection. Antonov AN2. :D
A little slow but can still bring a bunch of friends.

Buy a 340 and get pressurization, an extra engine, and money to spare.

Too many variables..

2 place, 4 place, 6 place?

Are we concerned with operating costs?

I'd probably go:

L-39 for a 2 place.
RV-10 for a 4 place.
Saratoga for a 6 place.

Dunno why you'd limit yourself to single engine though..

Build a Sportsman 2+2 with a DeltaHawk diesel engine in two weeks. 150 kts, 1000 lbs payload and 18k ceiling-no issue crossing the mountains. Put conventional gear on it and turn your x-country into a back country. When you get tired of flying, fold the wings and trailer it home.

You could get a really nice velocity xl for that much, if you didn't want pressurization

Comanche 400. You will need the leftover money for gas.
