Battlefield 4

Yes but I'm not that great it at.

Also, ironically, I can't figure out how to fly the aircraft in the game

It's super awkward. I haven't tried hooking a joystick up yet but I'm not sure it supports a joystick. I can fly the helicopters pretty well - I mostly just like to sit in the back and snipe. You can add me @ Dave67H if you're interested in playing a few games

Last time I tried was on some smaller city map, took one of the jets. Kept finding myself unable to line up a shot with anyone and having to turn around every 2 seconds when I zoomed across the map and left the "combat area".

So I got the bright idea to climb climb climb straight up then pull back inverted and go into a dive. It was working until I discovered that apparently after doing that the game won't let you pitch up anymore. That was the point where I put the stick away and gave up on it.

I've got it, but it's for xbox. I can fly the helicopters well, and the jets somewhat. I find it odd how if you cut the engines to idle in the jets (except for the F35 because it can hover) you just lose all control authority and literally drop out of the sky instead of stalling. Otherwise the game is pretty fun to play, especially on Domination mode.

I know it's totally the wrong thread for it, but are there any COD fans on here? I've never played Battlefield.

BattleField has always been so much better, for me.

I always get COD, but I've now realized that they're pretty much all the same. My favorite was Black Ops original. And as for flying the planes in video games, this has always been terribly difficult for me. The Harrier jet in the end of CoD MW3 (or was it Black Ops II?) took me about 10 deaths to finally complete. First, the controls are stupid because up is up and down is down (had to invert them in the settings). Then, when you want to turn the aircraft, it responds to where the control stick is (goes back to straight and level when the joystick is centered). Arghhhhh!!!

I haven't bought a new CoD in 2 years. Same stink different smell, everytime. Battlefield actually innovates

I really just get it for the online following. Honestly, it's probably going to be overshadowed by something else soon. Loved the zombies franchise in Black Ops though. Truthfully, I have no time for Xbox anymore really, and $50 is .7 on the hobbs in a 152. Only reason Black Ops Ghosts made it into the shopping cart was the Best Buy giftcard I got for my birthday.
Oh, and I sure as heck won't be getting that load of Xbox One garbage.

I havent picked up 4 yet (no time). But if the flying physics are anything like 3 it will be terrible. Joysticks wont help. Hitting the ceiling of the map just makes the plane deccelerate to near zero until it falls back down. Stalls are impossible. Helo's are fun though.

If you want a flying game try War Thunder, it's free and is a blast. Use mouse and keyboard controls as it's near impossible to be competitive with a joystick.

Waiting to find a Black Friday 'deal' for BF4 for PS3. I like the large map and somewhat of a strategy you get with BF4 over the 'run and gun' stuff in CoD.

BF2 was about the highlight of the series for me. Yeah, it's old, but the gameplay was so solid and non-linear with good vehicle choices and squads and weapons that were unique to each class. So much to do and so many routes to take and squads worked well. BF2142 was also really good in my opinion and I have many fond memories of running as fast as I can out of an exploding titan with every member of both teams right behind me trying to stab or shoot me in the back as we ran.

War thunder is incredibly solid for a free to play, they're racing to add in tanks and ground vehicles but I have no idea how they are going to balance it out. I am in tier 10-11 for most air forces (past that it's incredibly hard to afford to fly from what I hear). Mouse controls are too easy to use for people who have no idea what they are doing but it is nice throwing newbies into rolling scissors and confusing them after you blow a wing off. Historical Battles and Full Real Battles take a lot longer than arcade and I really wish they had more population and interest in them because I enjoy the full realism (where the joystick shines). I played CoD 2 / 3 / WaW / Modern Warfare 1/2 / Black Ops 1 and just quit there because it was all the same, just a better look and a few more guns and maps.

Been playing BF series since BF1942. Played every version except Bad company 1. Favorite is still BF2, although I do like BF4 alot. Been playing for the past week and Im hooked.

Cant fly the jets in this one though. When I go to idle the control stops working. so I cannot do strafing runs like in BF2 or BF3. At full throttle the planes have no maneuverability.

If you want to add me to friend list - -Switch243

Yep. Ford is better than Chevy, Toyota is better than Honda, Piper is better than Cessna... got it.

And that's why some of us like CoD so much. Fast paced adrenaline rush that doesn't favor the camper. I post this solely from the perspective of online multi-player. I have yet to complete a CoD campaign and in the last couple of releases I haven't even opened up the first level. If I wanted to do a campaign, I'd play Halo. Love their campaigns.

Main thing to remember about these games is... they're games. Realistic environments make it fun, but realistic game play... not so much. Real war is not even close to fun from what I've read and if it is, you need counseling.

Like I said, I've never played Battlefield, so I cannot comment on it and I'm not here to start a fight. Like I said, wrong thread I guess. Just wondering if there were any CoD fans. So far, guess not.

No, actually they are part of the brainwashing that keeps young men fight wars for rich old men. Kinda like video poker and blackjack games make people believe they can win at casinos.

All said and done, I suppose I'm a fan. It's the only video game I buy on a yearly basis. However, my love for the franchise is waning.

Why play the game Dave? Sign up for the real thing.

I've considered it, and still do every once and awhile. While I enjoy battlefield, something tells me I would hate the real thing. Not to mention I would be serving an administration I neither support or believe in.

Had my Origin account hacked and all the info scrambled. Had to create a new account just to chat with support. After two chats for about two hours, my account somewhat is intact. Can't figure out how to change the real name, but don't think I will ever give a credit card directly to EA after thier awful support.

Bf4 is on my list, but it is rare I get time to sit down. The hacker probably logged more bf3 hours in two weeks than I did in a year :) but hit me up and we can play at some point. my nickname matches between here and origin. Anyone play tf2?

COD and the Assassins Creed series were my favorites. But now I feel the same about both. My wife keeps telling me I have to finish last years Assassins Creed before the new one comes, so I think I'm getting it for Christmas, but I didn't like last years that well.

Oh hell yeah! I've been playing first person shooters for decades. I know I'm a killing machine! I can take out a whole platoon all by myself in under a minute. You should see how fast I can run, how far I can sprint, how quickly I can climb, how far I can jump and all with dual wielded pistols in my hands, hundreds of rounds of ammo and a light machine gun on my back. Oh yeah, I can really take a bullet too! If you don't get me in the head, or manage to land at least five in me, I shrug it off in under 10 seconds.

A platoon of guys like me could have taken down Iraq and Afghanistan all by ourselves. Iran we'd do just for double experience points over the weekend. We're just too lazy to leave the house is the problem.

You're not the target audience, 14-18year olds are.

weak minded 14-18 year olds. I grew up playing games like this. Never did it make me in any way interested in doing the real thing or joining up. Especially since then I could no longer play the game.

Kind of like how I've played Grand Theft Auto since I was in my teens and I haven't once gone out and carjacked anyone or shot anyone. :p

BF2 was pretty great, the sad thing to me was the map height limit. If you broke that in jets they would flip out and stall in hilarious fashions. Or if you skimmed JUST below it in the F-35 and lit the afterburner you would cross the map in just a couple seconds. Chinese J-10's would always out-turn you so you had to resort to using that to even the field.

Personally, I loved the Blackhawk and Cobra from BF2. I was a king with those. Did you guys know that you could use the side miniguns to kill APC's quickly? I could fly the rotors off both of those, punting troops that were unfortunate to be crossing an open street or field with my windshield and sending them cartwheeling. Or landing on top of snipers. Man, I miss that game. I played a mod of it called Sandbox and ended up being an admin and exploiting the hell out of it while building stuff and finding all kinds of neat bugs in the process (if you got on a stinger and spammed the F key at the right time while firing it would fire 8-10+ missiles at once in a shotgun pattern?).

2142 was really fun too, especially the dog-tag with the knife experience. Titans were fun and added all kinds of variety with titans and everything. I remember chasing a walker down the road many a time with my pistol trying to stay between its legs shooting it in the weak spots hoping to god it wouldn't shoot me.

Bad Company lost all of my interest in the BF series though, it was poorly put together in my opinion. It felt like it was moving too much towards CoD style gaming (dont get me wrong, I like CoD from time to time, but I don't like my screen shaking and bouncing like a fat dog on a space hopper whenever I take a step for added "realism"). The guns didn't feel different at all, in 1 or in 2. And then BF3 went even more CoD like - people using the F-18 and other jets just to run around and bail out of. The controls felt gross as did the mechanics. Now BF4 and CoD:Ghosts have DLC before the game is even released. It's sad really, I liked the BF series. I started on CoD 2 (the ww2 one) many a year ago.

Right now League of Legends and War Thunder (as well as some Minecraft and Guns of Icarus on the side) are slaking my thirst for gaming. Some TF2 on the side once in a while.

If you're looking for some funny reviews of famous games, look no further.

The closest game to BF2 I've found is something called ArmA II. The controls are confusing, awkward, unrealistic, and buggy, and I have no idea how it passed QC at all... but the jets look completely awesome from the ground, and scale as all get out. Flight mechanics were passable. Friend of mine and I set up a game where we'd just go flying around the Russian...Chinese...Chernarus map's coast, buzzing cities and shooting approaches on long stretches of road. Or bombing APCs. Not total realism but not arcade-y either.

On a side note, there was a modification for it called DayZ which was probably responsible for 50-75% of all of the sales for that game. Think every other zombie game, but instead of respawning or healing or being able to laugh at being shot...heh. If you die, you die. You respawn with nothing. The map takes at least 20-30 minutes to flat out run across. You need to find food, water, weapons, ammo for those weapons, heat sources, all in real time and against people who are in the same map as you. There are no minimaps, no maps unless you find one. The experience is a unique one and it was absolutely fun to play despite the janky engine it runs on. No player nametags either. You'd end up sneaking along the outskirts of a town, looking into it to see if there are any places to loot, then hear some faint pops from in the city and hunker down to watch. Unlike CoD, gunshots are rare and something to listen for. I remember just sitting there on the hill behind a bush with some binoculars I found, tracking players and watching them interact with each other. The best part is you never knew if anyone was friendly, and if they were, for how long. Some players would give you ammo, others would ask for supplies and kill you on sight. A great mechanic was blood bags from hospitals - you had to have someone else give you a blood transfusion, and one didn't easily regenerate blood levels many other ways (think health). You would have to find players to trust to not put bullets in you. Also add in real bullet drop and damage falloff, ricochets, disease, broken bones, cold, a real time day/night cycle, zombies, vehicles that you can rarely find and rarely fix with parts and fuel, and more zombies. It made for a great game.

There's a new ArmA out now, ArmA 3, and they are working on a standalone for DayZ itself but I'm not sure on the progress.

Guns of Icarus is another game I recommend, imagine being on an airship with 3 other people with different roles and having to fight against other airships in a steampunk-esque style. Naturally, I play most as Captain and actually fly and maneuver the ship and bark orders at the sheep that are usually on board to help us not explode into many tiny non-edible pieces. Usually you have two engineers who run around trying to prioritize things that are constantly being broken and shot like the balloon that keeps you afloat, the hull that keeps you together, the engines that keep you moving, and the guns that keep you shooting and a gunner and captain who are blowing things up and flying and maneuvering respectively. It's a pretty fun place to apply CRM and gel with people who have different styles of play and communicate in different ways (or not at all) and trying to outlast the other hulking airships trying to park bullets in you.

I always used the map height as a way to get someone off my tail that I could not shake any other way. either they would not follow me up knowing what happens, or I would re enter the atmosphere after them and be on there tail.

I really miss the F15s and wish they brought them back! The carpet bombing and second seat guided missile were awesome. I hate how in BF3 they kept the guided missile for the jets but the pilot had to do it it made it very difficult to use and all together I just stopped trying

I like the Do217....always thought it was a sexy airplane and it TEARS apart everything on an equal tier, all while taking a more serious beating than most bombers.

The Me-410 and its variants feel like that too. Not very maneuverable and not very fast but good lord the amount of ammo it can put out of the nose. I hang with bombers and pick off fighters that are climbing to intercept. The very last Me410 is terrifying, i'm almost to it. Two of the variants have 50mm cannons in the nose, pain to aim with though...

I know, right? I loved the two seater bombers (SU-30 / SU-34 / F-15) but almost no one would ride shotgun with me, I'd have to dual control the plane to use those weapons :p

It doesn't hurt that I've got a crew that's mostly maxed out. My auto gunners turn would-be attackers into mince meat. Another strange plane I really like is the T3 British medium bomber - the Blenheim I think. Nothing it's tier can catch it and it has powerful defensive weapons. It's a fun plane too.
