Basic Med may not catch on

Went to Wickenburg for a routine checkup and asked my Doc if they had heard about BasicMed. "Oh sure we just started that."
Since I expire on 7/31 I'll take the exam 8/2

FYI, if you're pushing the exam out to August to try to squeeze an extra month out of it like you might do with an AME visit or BFR, just remember that the BasicMed exam is good for 48 months rather than calendar months so it would expire on 8/2/2021.

I had no issue whatsoever getting BasicMed done. Not even a second thought from the doctor.

Hardest part was that I couldn't use my normal doc because apparently he is a PA not an MD, so I had to schedule an MD specific physical.

He laughed at the "so I need to examine your anus but not perform a DRE...so am I just supposed to checkout your butthole then?" To which I responded "if I were a chick, you'd need to look at, but not touch my vagina too."

Silly FAA.

Nick you are getting to the age where your butthole and attached equipment will become of interest to the medical profession. Some aspects of the interest may be slightly disturbing....

I dunno man. My prostate is inside my butthole. And is only accessible via DRE not by looking.

As far I know, the only things they'll see by looking is hemmerroids or rashes.

I'd actually be ok with a prostate exam. I get em yearly now anyway since my dad is dying from prostate cancer

Just wait until they run the telescope up to your small intestine...

My last AME visit cost $175. My doctor said he would do the BasicMed exam as part of my annual physical which is completely covered by my insurance.

I just had my annual wellness exam. I showed my doc the form and certification, and he said he would have no problem in signing it. My Class III is good for another year, but next summer I plan to go Basic Med.

I just brought the form to my annual physical and my doc did it with the other paperwork. No fuss, no co-pay, no problems.

Took me almost nine months to get my SI after not flying for several years and turning borderline diabetic, even though the AME was happy with my results and I filed reports from the specialist that treats me stating I was fine to fly. It seemed perverse to me that an FAA doctor in Oklahoma City that had never met me and had almost no information about my physical condition would be deciding my fate. The folks at the AOPA were actually quite helpful in getting me through the maze, but it was enormously stressful.

When my medical was close to expiration this May, I was one of the first to try BasicMed - my personal physician had no trouble with signing the form, and the visit was even covered by my insurance. The whole thing took less than an hour, and it has been a tremendous relief to me.

As pilots, we're responsible for all sorts of things that add up to safe flying, from proper recency of experience and flight planning to preflight and aircraft maintenance. While periodic health exams are important, it's odd to me that the FAA doesn't seem trust us to make the determination that we are medically fit to fly.

Did my BasicMed Saturday. Got the visual inspection, but no touching. $50 and about an hour total. After finishing, doc and I walked 100 yards over to the hangar and shot the bull with several other airport bums.

I wound up with the third class, mostly due to my dreams of flying to Canada and Mexico. My GP doc seemed pretty open to signing the form though. He ought to be, he's been seeing me for years and has yet to have to treat a medical problem.

I'd have a problem chatting socially with a guy who just inspected my exit.

My Doc just put N/A by the butt check. I think it is some guy's idea of a joke.
I think Congress specified that a version of FAA's Form 8500-8 be used, but didn't specify that FAA's instructions for that item be used, which state, "If the digital rectal examination is not performed, the response to Item 39 may be based on direct observation or history." [emphasis added]

Why are so many people concerned about whether a doctor looks at their butt? Who cares? :rolleyes1:

Meh. Not necessarily something I wanted, but it is the requirement. I've known and been friends with this doc for 10+ years. This was the first time I've seen him in a professional capacity. At this point, he's done several of the pilots on the field since May 1. No one has seemed to be bothered by it. It is just part of the process and was pretty painless. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy it either.

Speaking of BasicMed, I finally flew as PIC under BasicMed yesterday. It kind of felt like I was doing something wrong flying without a valid medical certificate lol
I have both till the end of the month so I guess I won't fly on it till October.
