ASRS on the chopping block. Comment period ends today (Jul 7)

I added my comment last week. The monthly emails alone provide vicarious-learning value.

Dropping this kind of valuable self-monitoring makes no sense to me. Would seem to require very little resource to maintain this database... and minimal data mining could provide useful info on weak spots in the system.

ASRS and a number of other similar programs are required to go through a renewal process every so many years. I believe for the ASRS is every 5 years. This filing is merely that renewal process which has been going on for a number of decades.

Looking at the OP link, it seems to be a review of the NASA method of collection rather than elimination of the ASRS/C3RS program.

Regarding the cost, NASA awarded Booz a new 5-yr contract in April 2024 for maintenance of ASRS/C3RS databases at just under $8M/yr.

The databases ain't nothing without the data being collected.

Fake news.
“The ASRS is one of the most effective tools we have for identifying safety trends before they become accidents,” said Jim McClay, AOPA director of airspace, air traffic, and security. “While some have expressed concern about possible cuts, we have been told this is just part of a routine review process. This is an opportunity for pilots to help ensure the program stays strong and continues to serve the aviation community.”

Still a good opportunity to comment on the value of the program.

You never know with the way things have been going, but "chopping block" is a little extreme for fairly normal part of the regulatory review process.

Yes, I commented.
