Another darn logging question

I am sure that this has been asked, but I don't seem to be finding the exact situation. I am a private pilot, ifr and multi rated. I was getting ready to start working on my commercial. I am now without a medical (topic of a future post) for two years. It is my understanding that I can't take my check ride until I have my medical. I assume I can log total time and training received while training for the commercial. I assume that if I wanted to fly with an instructor and receive some sort of training that I could log training and total time. What if I fly with a PP (not a cfi), he would be PIC, but I would be sole manipulator, anything log-able?

I've often thought most of the site could be turned into one big FAQ. Then you just have some volunteers delete threads and link them to the appropriate FAQ page. LOL.

Being PIC is neither necessary nor sufficient to log PIC.
