Aircard and a router?

I know what 4G is and it is a lot faster. Sprint will be an MVNO for 4G with Clearwire providing the networks. But right now there are only three 4G coverage areas in the US. Portland, OR, Chicago, IL, and Baltimore, MD. so it is really not an option for you.

Clearwire + those cities leads me to suspect that 4G = WiMAX. Rumor has it that it rocks.

Marketing WiMAX as 4G has a lot of truth to it since the ITU has yet to really decide what 4G aka IMT-ADVanced will be until late this year and into next. Currently IMT-2000 aka IMT is where the Clearwire system is embedded. It is technically a 3.XG system. 3.9G would be a fair comparison.

The Clearwire system in Portland, with links up to Redmond that may only be private right now, Baltimore and one other major city that has yet to announce commercial operations, does rock. It is based on the IEEE802.16e standard. IEEE802.16m will come out late this year and go to sponsor ballot and that is being targeted for submission per its PAR to IMT-ADV.

In Europe there is work on LTE with a reduced version starting initial system trials this year and LTE advanced coming out as a standard later in 2010. It too will be submitted for consideration as IMT-ADV. These two technology standards are likely to be the only terrestrial wireless submission for consideration as IMT-ADV.
