    Catalina Island, CA

That pic of the southern end of Catalina is showing where they pull gravel and sand for construction. That's been there for as long as I've been flying over Catalina (20+ years) and I'm sure it was there before that.

    Looking for a car

OUCH! So sorry to hear. I don't suppose you'd be interested in a 2021 Tesla Model 3? I'm thinking pretty seriously about buying a model S, so I'd need to sell the 3.

    Catalina Island, CA

This might help. As mentioned above - you can do this with GPS instead of VOR. Use SMO as the starting waypoint when entering the special flight rules corridor over Santa Monica and VPLSR as the exiting waypoint over the intersection of the 405 freeway and Hawthorn Blvd. Squawk 1201 while...

Announcing on CTAF 15 miles out - why is this a thing?

15 miles is a pretty far out, but asking to limit the calls to only aircraft in the pattern is way too close. I've had a few too many close calls with cowboy pilots at Catalina. I appreciate the call outs. Keep em short and concise, but let everyone know where you are.

    Resale Value of Airplane Upgrades

The rule of thumb I heard, was that you get 50% (-ish) of the upgrade cost back when you sell the plane. I've also heard it said that you can recoup the cost of the avionics, but not the labor. In reality, it's more complex than that and there is no hard and fast rule that you can actually...

Sold 14v B-Kool Ice Box Air Conditioner @KFUL

It does a great job for about 60 minutes. Block ice lasts longer than cubes. It can be a life saver on hot days! For really hot weather, you need to use it on ground and during the climb to altitude, then turn it off once you reach a cooler altitude so that you can conserve ice for the...

Sold 14v B-Kool Ice Box Air Conditioner @KFUL

I recently added air conditioning to my plane, so I no longer need the B-Kool! This is just the thing for summer flying. I'm based at KFUL (Fullerton California). $175 if you pick it up. $200 if I fly it to somewhere nearby (between MYF and CMA) These sell for $299 new...

    I can't believe I'm not doing this!

I guess it's good that you have the mental stamina to admit that this isn't for you right now, but DAMN! I love my A36 and can't imagine being able to pass that up if I was in your shoes.

New CFI (Me) and my Son

My dad taught me to fly. At times, it wasn't easy, but it's something that we both share now and I feel incredibly lucky that I was able to do it with my dad. In my case, I was 39 yrs old when I started training with my dad. My dad had been an instructor since I was about 9 or 10 years...

    Southern California Shops. Garmin Dealers

I got a call from AIE Avionics at French Valley asking if I wanted to get anything done. I got the impression that they are starting to slow down. Might be worth giving them a call if you need work done.

Advice for flying to Los Angeles

Flying in the LA airspace is not difficult. Use Flight Following, pay attention to where the Bravo is and be sure you hear those magic words - "Cleared into the Class Bravo" if you need to go there. The SoCal controllers are very good and are willing to help if you can communicate your needs.

Advice for flying to Los Angeles

Regarding fuel options - If you end up going to Camarillo at some point, then some of the cheapest gas in the LA area is at Santa Paula (KSZP). That would be about a 5 minute hop from CMA. If you are gassing up for the trip home, I'd consider Big Bear (L35). Cheap gas and a great chance to...

Advice for flying to Los Angeles

The food at Camarillo is head and shoulders above what you’ll find at Catalina. It does get busy though, so it’s best to arrive early if possible. If your wife enjoys a mimosa, Bloody Mary, or some other breakfast cocktail, then CMA is the place to be. If you haven’t been to Catalina...

Advice for flying to Los Angeles

Since you're planning on spending a few days in the area, I would plan to use SMO. Not as close as BUR or VNY, but more options to explore and a more friendly airport (for now) to GA. They do have a landing fee, which isn't too high though. Hop over to Camarillo for breakfast on your way out...

    Leather vs other interior materials

Next time your in SoCal, there's a Naugles on Beach Blvd. Its got the original menu. The idea of Naugles brought back nostalgic memories of ditching class in high school to get a burrito. First bite brings you right back - next bite makes you realize that you used to eat some serious crap!

    Scotch or Bourbon vs Tequila

As mentioned above, Jose Cuervo Riserva De La Familia is excellent. If you’re getting ready to make some kind of remark about it being from Cuervo, you just drank too much crap Cuervo Gold in the 80’s. RISERVA IS EXCELLENT. I also really like Dulce Amargura Extra Anejo...
