    First CFI Lesson

Good writeup, Tristan. I remember talking to you at Gaston's about your CFI pursuit, and am glad you are following through. You'll do well. Seeing students from all walks of life, I agree with Tony and others that some things you learn today may not seem applicable until years later. Keep us...

The worst pilot I ever saw was.....

You're right, Dan. After we landed, he was far more humble and we ended up flying about ten hours just to get his skill level to an acceptable level. I never did sign him off to fly solo, though.

The worst pilot I ever saw was.....

Well, if you've ever flown with Bill or Brent...Just kidding. I was a check pilot in CAP, and a commercial pilot wanted to check out in the C182 (non-glass). His skills had deteriorated so much that the only thing he did average on was straight and level. I ended up grabbing the controls on...

How old were you when you pursued the dream?

33 for me. I wanted to pay as I went along and not acquire a lot of debt.

    Flew around Lake Michigan today

Sounds like a good trip. I hope to make it to Mackinack Is next year. What were you flying?

Great story, and thanks for sharing it.

No mercy from ATC. Violate every pilot error says FAA

Gosh, I wonder how this will affect instructors signing off a student for a solo flight/cross-country? Will the student and myself be written up if the student deviates accidentally?

    CFI Question

Interesting, Ken. Thanks for the update. I knew Ben Carr had done some rides earlier but didn't know if he was continuing to do so.

    CFI Question

No. Some DEs can/will do the ride. Check with your local examiner to get their opinion.

    XM Weather Question

I agree with Lance F. This has been a good tool in the box to make a lot of my recent trips possible. Without it, I would have canceled the flight.

    Happy Birthday Brent

Hey, dude - happy birthday! Now, stay away from little planes 'cause they are dangerous...

    Weekend getaway to Florida

We attempted to rent a beach house but the prices were too high compared to a hotel room. So we roughed it at the Ramada. Don't know if I would hangglide. I saw many folks para-sailing when we were at Ocracoke. It's interesting how they assemble the sail, then walk it to the water all the while...

    Are you flying less X-country?

Flying quite a bit more. We've taken more trips in the past eight months than I have the past five years (aside from flight training with students). Even with the high price of Avgas I'm cutting back elsewhere to afford my habit.

    Weekend getaway to Florida

Nice pics & good write-up, Tristan. We just got back from Outer Banks, NC, where the atmosphere is more laid back for us older folks, but the beaches are fantastic. Stayed in Kill Devil Hills, but took the plane to Ocracoke and ate oysters at Howards Pub (yeah, that...

    First Sign-Off as a CFI

The DE is Ben Carr. He's a good and fair person, well liked amongst the pilots and CFIs.

    First Sign-Off as a CFI

Congrats, Ken. My first sign-off was a Commercial student, who was a good pilot. I've been working on my first Private and Instrument students, and soon I will be experiencing the same reservations as you had. I am amazed at how many come to me, get some lessons, then quit, because they thought...

    Gaston's Film Thread

Very nice. I remember when that footage was shot. Besides the roar of the airplane, I could hear "Don't hit the camera, DON'T hit the CAMERA, DON'T HIT THE CAMERA!!!!!"

    Gaston's is requesting feedback

I've done similar when traveling to a hotel, only to find out I left the power supply (ie The Brick) at home/work. Using the hotel's business center computer can be a real drag...

    Gaston's is requesting feedback

Yeah, the filter/cup/amenities were wrapped together in a cellophane package - looked like a silver ball of...something , but not coffee.
