    Solo student's mishap

Yeah, I think her training was lacking in more areas than just situational awareness. I know my cross countries were mostly to airports where my instructor and I had already gone. Besides, wouldn't any instructor (especially in a mountainous area) do some THOROUGH flight planning with her to an...

Private Pilot License, Part 61 vs. Part 141

I wonder if they don't focus on that in the CPL syllabus. Just a thought. But you're right. The airlines fly airways too. LOL

Private Pilot License, Part 61 vs. Part 141

For what it's worth, I flew with a co-worker on a 24 leg trip all over Florida 5 years ago in the summer (Obvious IMC season). He did his PPL and IR training at a prominent 141 school that will remain nameless. He was a good pilot; handled the airplane (G-1000 equipped C-172) well and I believe...

    UPS A300 down

Could a simple altimeter setting error cause some of the confusion identified? It may be easy to discount he EGPWS warnings if both altimeters (set with the same erroneous baro) indicated a safe altitude.

To what extent would you obey this NOTAM?

So even NOTAM(D)s aren't regulatory in nature, FAA can still get you for "careless and reckless" because you failed to heed what is in essence, "a suggestion" (since it is non-regulatory). That's just wrong on so many levels.

OK, which one of you is this?

LOL! They each thought the other was the instructor? That's hilarious!

    Complex training

I just completed my complex checkout in the F33 Bonanza earlier this spring. My instructor recommended the following article which lit up some lightbulbs and cleared up a few things that I didn't realize I didn't fully understand. Probably a good refresher read from time to time too...

    KPIE -> KFXE

It's been a couple decades since I took my PPL checkride in very simple airspace, but this post makes me wonder: do people really get flight following for a checkride? Seems to me that's almost "cheating" as it detracts from the ability to navigate airspace (specifically since it may result...

    SWA LaGuardia

SWA flight crews just seem to be happier and enjoy their jobs. That translates to a nice customer experience. I have flown Virgin America and I can tell you I really liked it. Newer airplanes and they really seem to be trying to concentrate on the customer experience. Too bad they're being sold...

    lunch

I've done that. What a great way to burn an hour. Even took some co-workers with me. This was 20 years ago, though.

    SWA LaGuardia

And that, my friend is why SWA is getting the best of ALL other domestic carriers. I avoid all other domestic airlines in favor of SWA when I have the opportunity. Even if it means making a stop vs nonstop. And I promise, there are MANY others who do the same. SWA's safety record is far and...

    Old tyme crop dusting

Amazes me how these pilots can fly a couple feet off the ground and manage all that energy. And without auto-throttles!!!!! (Sorry)

    Plastic Bag in Prop

I had always heard they were testing the integrity of the windscreen. Sme foreign carrier. They wrote Boeing who said "thaw the chicken/turkey/whatever".

LOL! I was waiting for someone to say that, Bobby! Funny stuff.

    First in-flight failure

Well, it looks like you mitigated your situation well. Reminds me of my last flight, actually. Flew up to pick up my daughter last month in an F33 Bonanza. She was to be my first passenger since my complex endorsement and Bonanza checkout. En route to get her, I had a pressure pump failure...

    First in-flight failure

Oh, and with the weather sounding a little "sketchy" what happens if you wind up in IMC and lose the vacuum? That turn and bank is relying on that electrical system you didn't think was too important. Remember, many accidents are precipitates of an accident chain where the first issue doesn't...

    First in-flight failure

I have to agree. Not a great idea. Especially with your father who is apparently not too fond of flying (or am I reading to much into it?). The way the previous renter handed off the aircraft to you ("keep an eye on it") makes me question his judgement as well. Sorry to be a little harsh, but...

Wrong Altitude for Direction of Flight

Okay, now I understand the controller's responsibility. But we as pilots aren't held to a standard that requires us to know their playbook. However, we are required to understand our rules which state in 91.159 that we are to maintain appropriate altitudes UNLESS APPROVED BY ATC. So it makes...
