    Looking for advice

When I lived in the Chicago area I kept my airplane at KARR. Easy access to I-88. However, based on your situation of not needing a car, it would be easy enough to fly into KMDW. Pro and cons for KDPA, but KARR and KMDW have their own as well. Let the frenzy start.

    Tower Instruction?

Since I'm an air traffic controller, Pete's explanation is correct. However, here's another example of what you might get asked to report. "N1234, report a 2 mile base for a 3 mile straight-in." A call like this one would help the controller sequence you with a couple of aircraft already in...

Spirit Airlines to charge for use of overhead bins

I believe 30 to 40 dollars is to much; however, 5 to 10 dollars for anything other than a purse or computer (or the like) is reasonable. I travel frequently and have seen people bring on a backpack, computer case and roller bag. I've seen families travel with their kitchen sink! Give me a...

Negotiating ATC instructions in Bravo airspace

Since you live in the Detroit area I'd recommend a tour of the Detroit TRACON. This will allow you see what your transition through the Class Bravo impacts.. ie the traffic flow in and out of DTW. What makes some transitions through Bravo airspace tricky is that you will traverse many sectors...

I'd recommend the Radio Ranch in Sterling/Rock Falls. They do excellent work and are very honest.

Advising ATC of a HotAir Balloon in the Area.

Good Question! It depends on numerous conditions such as the type radar, speed of object, type of object and altitude. If the object has a transponder it gives ATC a better possibility of tracking it.

    TFR predictions?

Definetly check the TFR notams prior to flight; however, asking for VFR flight following from your friendly appoach control and/or center can help you stay clear of TFR'S.

    This is a new one

These are the same people who believe Air Traffic Controllers are the ones on the tarmac with the flashlights or orange sticks helping to park aircraft.

    Morris, IL Restaurant Closed

I talked to Bill @ Morris today (one of the FBO Guys) and he said the restaurant should be reopened. Evidently, another local eatery is going to reopen the old "CAFE," called Ebbey George's. The menu is supposed to be similiar to the one in town -- breakfast to burgers.

Advising ATC of a HotAir Balloon in the Area.

Hot Air Balloons can launch inside of a 30 nm Class B ring; however, there are numerous glidelines to be followed. Publications such as the AIM, FAR's and CFR's outline the proceedures and/or requirements.

Advising ATC of a HotAir Balloon in the Area.

As an Air Traffic Contoller @ Chicago Center, we appreciate traffic information on hot air balloons and/or even a handful of helium balloons lost from a kids birthday party or the circus. I'm sure the controller at Detroit Approach appreciated your call; however, didn't articulate it well...

    Mackinac Island

If you're landing RWY 28, speed control my friend, speed control!!! The RWY has a hump about 500 to 1000 feet from the treshold and then is down hill from there, you'll be chasing the RWY all the way to the drop off at the end of the RWY. Landing fees are $10.50 for singles and $10.50 a night...

A good stop in the CLE area is 1G5 which is Medina County Airport. Eventhough, it's in (under class B) south of Hopkins its very easy to get in and out. I've always had good service from Cleveland Apph. SS fuel 24 hrs. FBO closes around 8 p.m.
