    Weather

Sure, I used to think - man the day I have my instrument rating I'll never be stuck on the ground anymore! gazing up at 800ovc knowing there were blue skies above it. While the promise of this motivated me to get thru the IR, reality proved a lot different, and you quickly realize the...

    Finally Bought a Plane!

Out of 60 CAPS activations 9 planes have returned to service again. That's 15% of airframes which have not been a total loss. Interestingly when the system has been used within the design envelope, no fatalities have occurred. In stark contrast to typical forced landings, where you have a...

    Finally Bought a Plane!

Hi Bob, Congratulations on your purchase!! I hope you invest in some training from a CSIP instructor and partake in the many CDM and CPPP courses the owners association puts on. It will put you into the type that currently has GA fatality rate 80-90% lower than the business/personal use...

45th Cirrus CAPS (Parachute) activation in Aus and the best footage caught to date.

I'm surprised no one has posted about this yet. Happened yesterday in Australia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX-QUVen9Ng awesome awesome video The 45th CAPS activation and another 3 lives most likely saved. Reason for the pull is still unknown. Calling all Cirrus pilots to learn about...

IFR NORDO... When is a course reversal required

I didn't ask my question clearly. When must a procedure turn (or hold in lieu of a procedure turn) be used with respect to your bearing to the fix relative to the approach course? You would not execute one when you are already approaching the final fix from your enroute already on the...

IFR NORDO... When is a course reversal required

Ok so are you saying, for example, you were cleared to MIDDS, and even though you are approaching BECCA on the approach course at the intercept altitude, you must still do the hold?

IFR NORDO... When is a course reversal required

You've lost comms. Take a look at this approach plate into KLGB (Long Beach) as an example. http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1309/00236IL30.PDF You are approaching BECCA which was your clearance limit, and you are in IMC for the purposes of this example and you intend to land at KLGB. There is...

Interesting CNN piece > Murder rates in cities.

Worlds most dangerous cities... New Orleans is 21st on the list with a murder rate of 57.88 per 100,000 people per year. I thought it was interesting when I heard that's how they measured it because it sounds similar to aviation safety. Fatal accident rate of 1.33 / 100,000 hours (2009)...

    SVFR

Definition of a cloud If there is an absence of a definition, I'd look at it this way - We avoid clouds for three reasons as VFR: 1) Maintaining required visibility for separation from other traffic 2) Maintaining adequate visual references to a horizon 3) Icing and other weather hazards...

    Java????

DHS issued a warning in January about Java 7 update 10 and less and I believe they removed it from government computers as sophisticated hackers originating in Asia were using it to gain access to high value US computers without the user even knowing or doing anything to make themselves...

    SVFR

You are correct FAA FSS ORDER JO 7110.10V 4-5-1. AUTHORIZATION 3 "Only when requested by the pilot." I think their way of "offering" it to you is to say "Field is below VFR. An ATC clearance is required. State your intentions"

    SVFR

Hey, Would appreciate those who are are FAR experts giving a yes or no answer to the below: 1st Question: Does "clear of clouds" in SVFR mean there is no horizontal or vertical minimums away from a cloud? For example, as long as I have visibility of 1SM and an SVFR clearance I could fly...

    Watch out for the crazies

Well is there any guidance for pilots transitioning across fields? Any time I do it, I would go mid field well above pattern altitude. Anyone crossing final/departure at altitudes that there is traffic on approach or at pattern altitude is waiting for something to happen.

    Watch out for the crazies

I understand they are supposed to give traffic advisories. So I'm not sure if this is correct. Correct, but that does not mean that the tower does not give traffic advisories. OK forum police. Got it.

    Watch out for the crazies

Seriously? What a douche! I almost 'became one' with a banner tower in the pattern at Santa Monica. He just flew at pattern altitude across the field, I dived to the right to avoid him. What an ass. What's worse is the tower never called him out. I said to the tower "Piper 2L had a REAL good...

Taking off VFR from a Class B Primary Airport

So anyone have advice on distance to keep from big jets while taxing? I don't want my cirrus to be this Ford: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ9uWsvR1l0 BTIZ Atlantic Charges: - $45 landing fee was waived by buying 15 gallons of overpriced (by about $2.50 a gallon) av gas. - Parking is $40...

First Plane and Cirrus SR20 Gen 1/2/3 related questions.

Hi spdracer888, I started in a cirrus right after my private. I have about 10 hours in an SR22 and 20 hours in an SR20 gen 3. Three things I think you will find useful to know: Firstly, I've read loads that it takes much longer to finish your VFR in a Cirrus due to hacking the...

Taking off VFR from a Class B Primary Airport

So I thought I would report back, here's what happened "LAS VEGAS CLEARANCE NXXXXX IS TYPE CIRRUS SR20 SLASH GOLF LANDING SANTA MONICA 8500 VFR" "CIRRUS XX CLEARED THROUGH THE CLASS BRAVO FLY HEADING 240 AT OR BELOW 5000 DEPARTURE FREQUENCY 12X.X SQUAWK 4647" So they ended up giving me...
