    Wings of Hope

If you missed it, I wanted to call out that the Wings of Hope Raffle has started. The airplane this time is nice - Cherokee 180, zero time engine, dual G5s and a GTN 650. I don’t expect tickets will last nearly as long as they did last time. In 24 hours they sold 2500 tickets, so as of about...

US submarines leap forward in quietness

Having served on a submarine, I still stay pretty close to the submarine community. Thrilled to hear they’re starting to put magneto hydrodynamic propulsion on our boats. The rumors are the Russians were working on this tech just before the Soviet Union fell and even outfitted one of their...

What do I need to know about using a buyer's agent / recommendations?

The question is in the title - What do I need to know about using a buyer's agent and does anyone have recommendations? Looking for a ASEL nose dragger, aluminum construction, 140+ kts and fixed gear preferred, but other than that I'm not set on any particular make or model.

Ugly plane good engine or good looking plane that needs overhaul?

I see two aircraft of interest to purchase right now, same model, same year. #1 looks good, but has 2300 hours on the lycoming A1A engine. That's an overhaul for me, the aircraft is fairly discounted for the engine. #2 has 200 hours on a pretty recent overhaul but makes e-man's mooney look...

    Mosaic impacts for maintenance

First question - am I reading Mosaic right? We know the range of aircraft eligible for sport pilots is changing and the FAA is doing away with the LSA definition in 1.1. This morning I was up early and started reading through MOSAIC to see what that meant for LSA Repairmen and LSA IAs, but I...

Cold cylinder - 200F in cruise

BLUF - anything else I could have done different? Flying on Sunday, I saw the #2 cylinder indicating 200F in cruise, when the others were in the 1200+ range. The engine seemed to be running fine and performance wasn't low so I suspect this was just a sensor problem. I was maybe 5 miles north...

Carbon fiber airplanes? - branch from titanic sub

branching from the titanic sub thread to talk more about carbon fiber as airplane structures Interesting. how suitable is carbon fiber for airplane structures? I’m thinking of dark aero. Are they building an airplane that going to suddenly break apart one day at an unknown time...

    RV-7A completed youtube build log

I'm looking for a 7A or 9A complete build vlog on youtube and having trouble finding one. Any suggestions? Ideally, many episodes, say 20 minutes per episode, someone who has finished the build, and built a 7A or 9A. This is for my entertainment and education, so longer and more episodes are...

    Initial heading DME arc?

Reference, the VOR approach at KBUY, which contains a DME arc. https://flightaware.com/resources/airport/BUY/IAP/VOR_DME-A/pdf When arriving at Stase (IAF), you turn into the 27 DME arc. How do you know what heading to turn to? Foreflight breaks the arc apart for you, so I was able to read...

    Forest fire smoke a problem?

Might be overthinking this. Is the forest fire smoke a problem for engines? I don't know how much particulate matter gets ingested from smoke, but it has to be something, right?

    Tell me it gets better

A little frustrated with inconsistency in my instrument flying right now. I’ve got around 25 hours simulated and actual and at times it’s all I can do to maintain course and altitude, sometimes not even that. If I look away for a second, I’m 20 degrees off course - how am i supposed to do more...

    Timer for IFR?

The airplane I’m training in doesn’t have a convenient timer. There are lots of inconvenient ones, none of which are in the scan range. Pa-28 with gtn650, G5, Garmin radio. What would/do you use? I kind of like this, but where to put it?

    Need vacation idea

So, I have vacation the week of 3/20, but my plans to go on a scuba liveaboard fell through and the ones remaining are over my price range of 2.5k. I made a reservation, but they were overbooked and determined I was last. My second thought was to go to the beach somewhere and just dive off...

Why are super vikings so cheap?

On a price per performance scale, Super Vikings are super cheap. Not quite 1950s Bonanza cheap, but much less than comparable aircraft. What causes them to be so low in price? Just not well known and not a big market? Expensive to repair?
