Whats the scariest thing that's happened to you in flight.

flying along under clear blue skies with a 20% chance of isolated TS, and within 10 - 12 minutes finding myself nearly surrounded by TSs which were in the process of merging with me in the middle. I think I'll always remember the conversation with FS when I called in a pirep. The guys voice...

What Is The Non-Towered Traffic Pattern "Size"?

When the field starts to get crowded with different types of aircraft, the pattern naturally gets bigger. A Mooney following a C150 needs to fly a wider pattern and an longer downwind so he doesn't get too close to the the slower aircraft. The student behind the Mooney flys a longer than...

    Enthusiasm and Flight Training

When I was a student I had two XCs that really lit the fire for me. Both were flown to fields which were having a warbird show - not an airshow, just ground displays. At both stops the C150 was only shut down for about 5 minutes. There is one thing about each of them that really affected me...

    Improving visibility = bad?

Last summer and the previous summer I had close encounters with rapidly developing thunder storms. I posted about them here at the time. I've mentally re-lived those encounters many times. In retrospect, I realized that a lot of the "wow, where did that come from" was due to the visibility...

What do you do for a living?

Shortly before he passed away my father told me that his biggest regret was not finishing up his training and getting his PPL. That was one of the things that spurred me on. After the funeral, Mom gave me his logbook. I was surprised to see how close he was to completing his training in the...

    Realistic Distraction

Early in my training the door on the 150 popped open just after TO, at about 50 ft. My CFI was impressed that I didn't let it bother me and just left it open until downwind. At that time, most of my time in GA aircraft was as a skydiver. I considered flying a Cessna with the door open as...

What do you do for a living?

I'm a system admin for a regional insurance company. The pay's ok but the hours can be downright insane. I didn't go very far toward my PPL when I first got interested (too) many years ago. When I decided to go for it again, I made sure I had funds available (but it will always take more than...

    Taixiing into parking

FWIW. My CFI taught me to never taxi over a rope. I'm sure some of the more experienced pilots will weigh in on the validity of that instruction.

    Nicholas is in the hospital

It's great to hear that you're doing well. Did they say how long it'll be before you can get back in the cockpit?

    Nicholas is in the hospital

Best wishes Nick. And sorry I'm late. It seems like bad things only happen to good people. :( And Tony, forget the cookies. With a wired jaw it's ice cream - btdt.

Assault: 6 years in prison. Victim dies 9 years later: New charge of murder.

Around here, if a driver kills someone while DUI he/she can expect to be charged with, at least, manslaughter.

    They Walk Among Us!

What's bad is that they are not limited to harmless jobs. A few months ago I tried to file a Pirep about a large, unforecast, area of rain just east of Perry. The guy at FS kept insisting that I had to give him the location in relation to an IFR waypoint. I'm just a VFR pilot, and I was...

    They Walk Among Us!

BJ's does that too. But twice the person checking items as I left has caught mistakes made by the check out person. Both times were "buy one get one free" where I was charged for both and didn't notice at the checkout. And I don't see how they picked that up so quickly, I had full carts of...

What good is my AOPA membership?

The benefits I get from AOPA are the legal plan, the online airport directory, and the flight planner. But if I have a few bucks I want to donate for aviation it will go to EAA. Their focus is closer to the type of flying that I can afford.

Found myself a long term co-pilot!

If not, some type of restraint is highly recommended. Even a small dog deciding to jump from the front seat to the back of the cargo space just as you begin to rotate can have a surprisingly dramatic effect on a light aircraft's pitch attitude.

If it wasn't for these polls I wouldn't even notice that you were making changes. Everything looks normal to me.

    Instrument Training on Flight Reviews

I haven't even started IR training, but on every FR (I get them more than bi-annually) I specifically ask for hood time.
