    First Aviation Headset - Help

Buy something like a DC now. Upgrade to A20 once you have the funds (don't slow down your training for a $1000 headset). Keep the DC for passengers or a backup. A20s have pretty good resale value. If you buy new for $1000, you could sell for about $800 easy.

    iPad + Foreflight?

The iPad + Foreflight combo is amazing. I fly with it all the time. Not using an EFB (even without a GPS position source) would be ridiculous. There's so much information readily available at your fingertips. It makes flying much simpler. I'm also an advocate of using it during pilot...

    Garmin Pilot vs Foreflight

Get the one you like best. I'm in favor of having a subscription as a student. I integrated an EFB (ForeFlight) into my training, and it worked out very well. There's a WEALTH of information all together in one device that makes flight planning much easier. You don't need to rush to use...

aviation weather decision making tor the student PPL

Do you have ForeFlight or something similar? I like studying weather patterns in my area and correlating that with what I see and feel outside and what METARs and TAFs are showing. If you do that enough, you'll start to understand what all the weather products mean. I plan imaginary flight...

Another "how do I log this" question

I'd log all of them as XC time. You can put them all on one line or split them up. The spirit of the rule is to get you experience outside of your local comfort zone. Talking to different controllers, finding new landmarks, more comprehensive weather planning, etc etc. It's reasonable to see...

    Opinions are like...

Cajun_Flyer, I'm glad you came here to vent and hear from the other side. Never give up on your dreams. I can't really comment on your marriage, but I know that a good relationship involves support from each other. If the compromise makes you give up something that really drives you, then you...

    Storing passwords

I use 1Password. It has browser integration and TouchID integration on iOS.

    Computing Winds Aloft

I use ForeFlight's computations to get an idea of what to expect. When I did my student XC's, I found them to be quite accurate and less time consuming when interpolating. When I'm in the plane, I just look at my ground speed to see if I like it or not.

    GPS approach requests

A note on LNAV+V: If I'm reading correctly (links below), that is an LNAV approach for all intents and purposes and should be flown as such. The +V is vertical guidance calculated by the GPS unit and is only advisory. It helps avoid dive and drive. It is not LNAV/VNAV and all step down altitudes...

Is training harder then the real thing??

I used to feel the same way. It was difficult even thinking about making radio calls, looking for traffic, flying a pattern and listening to my CFI all at the same time. That's why I did it one at a time. All of it now comes naturally (except for CFIs who talk too much :-P)...

How not to afford personal flying

Been there. Done that. Left. Friends in NYC thought I was crazy to leave. Numerically, I make a touch less now than I did in NYC, but I'm making out like a bandit. I can easily afford to fly 10-20 hours a month now.

    The airport was there first....

Yes, ban those pesky training activities. We all know training doesn't make anyone safer anyhow.

    TAF versus MOS?

Here are some articles from Scott D. at ForeFlight about MOS. For IFR alternate requirements, TAF is the official source. MOS is an "another-tool-in-the-toolbox" feature. It's interesting to compare the two and watch what actually happens. Sometimes MOS is more correct than the TAF, and...

    Wake turbulence...

I don't play with it. I'm quick to do one of these: - Wait 2-3 min to takeoff if something heavy left before me - Do a 360 in the pattern to delay landing (whatever takes 2-3 minutes) - If I have a long runway, use the opportunity to come in high and practice a good slip Also keep in mind...
