I'm about to buy King School's Instrument Written & Checkride Course for $398 unless someone can suggest something better and/or cheaper.

I'll wait for a while
 
only thing I could suggest, if you were closer, is that we split it.

Also I did the king IR checkride video and sportys IFR videos. The sportys IFR videos I thought were much more thourough and I certainly learned more from them.
 
I'm familiar with Sheppard and I've known a couple of people who've passed the test because it USED to be word for word. But haven't the tests all changed now? However, I'd like to actually learn the material rather than just learn the test. I'm doing a lot of this on my own since my CFII is in and out of town. (He flies for Boutique) and I need an endorsement to take the test.
 
I did Sporty's test prep for my Private and it was okay but it was just the questions. My ground school was 25 years earlier and a lot of that had been forgotten by the time I took the test.
 
For the written just buy the Gleim book..
Never knew there was some sort of course for the checkride.
 
SheppardAir, by far, if you want to ace the written. Yes, it allows you to just learn the answers. However, you can actually learn the material if you carefully read the explanations provided and read the cited sources.

As far as learning it all yourself, the biggest thing that helped me was reading all of the applicable FAR's and the entire AIM. After that, it was just going out and flying in the IFR system.
 
For content and learning, the free books on the FAA website, such as the Instrument Handbook and other related books, all PDF. There's also an FAA document for the various checkrides. No need to,spend money.

Now, if you're looking for quiz training on thr written exam, any of the commercial stuff is fine.

How long ago? From what I've heard they haven't changed their course to reflect the new standards and/or updated test questions. I could be wrong, that's just what I've heard.

Good advice but the same question I asked simtech remains. If they've updated their course and someone pipes up saying that they've taken the test recently after using Sheppard Air, I'm all for it and thanks for the huge $$ savings.
 
I do. He's currently in Minneapolis flying PC-12s for Boutique. He's transferring to Phoenix in April then we'll start training all the time. He took his test prep with Sheppard Air but that was before the FAA switched things up. Like I said, if someone chimes in saying that they used Sheppard Air recently and passed the written, I'm locked and loaded to follow suit.

I really appreciate all the quick answers. I'm putting my wallet back in my pocket and thanking you guys for saving me money.

There a few, usually used to download music. But there are other things on there. Movies, computer programs. All free downloads. Just have to scan what you download before opening due to possible viruses.
 
Thumbs up for Sheppard air. I used them in January and it seemed spot on. Got a 90. Just follow their study recommendations and no problem.

The "I do" was in response to you as well but to follow up. The links provided are pretty valuable. The Airplane IFR quick review sheets have a lot of information and the book is similar to my private PTS guide.

As in two months ago January? If so case closed, that's the direction I'm going.

Yeah I took mine 4 years ago...However, I didn't think the instrument changed yet? Could be wrong and likely am.

Can always call and ask, they are really easy to deal with.
 
If the other Tim who posted above comes back and says it was this past January then I'm going with Sheppard Air.

Any test? I took the ATP using their software in Janurary. 99%

My intrument written was back in 2012 so I'm not much help there.
 
When I used Sheppard, they updated the question list multiple times in the month or two that I used them. It would shock me if they weren't up to date with the latest test questions.
 
King course worked for me - they sprinkled in tips and techniques, etc. Also had the Gleim book, which was oddly engrossing. . .the FAA stuff is accurate, jumbled, mixes the essential and trivial without diffrentiation, but as a "lookup" reference is good - Instrument Procedures, etc.

That is like saying to study for a driver's license test by reading the DVM Vehicle Code Book...

King got me passed on both PPL and IFR and was a happy camper.
 
All of the above is good advice other than the torrent thing. That's just piracy.

My favorite books are ASA. Gleim second. FAA third.

But I found that after studying with ASA or Gleim or any of the others that a read of the FAA material AFTER, helped solidify the material and also gives insights into "FAA Brain". No other good way to put that, except that there's specific wordings, phraseology, tone, and even the feel of the writing being done in second person or third person, that only an FAA person could write. It helps when reading their stuff in questions and later in other FAA pubs.

Not sure how else to describe it. But FAA is free anyway, so it always gets a nod to the study pile.

As you get to the flying and away from the written, "IFR A Structured Approach" by Eckalbar is a good read if you can find a copy. A little dated and not about glass, but good nevertheless.
 
I'm using King right now for the IFR written. I'm all through the course, just re-taking the random question practice exams before going in to take the FAA test. Even though some of the videos are very dated I've found that I learned the material better than using the Jep course for my PPL written.

Planning on taking the FAA written real soon, so we'll see if practice exams are similar to the actual FAA exam.
 
I say wing it, just go in and take it. Hell you only need a 70% right?

A buddy of mine gave me the Sporty's DVD IFR Video set a few years ago. I think they were from the mid 2000's. Between those, the FAA pubs and the Sheppard test prep I passed everything. I have since ripped the videos to .mpgs and watch them on my IPAD about every 6 months.
