Saw a man get tazed and arrested today

I'm surprised at all the backlash for recording. My life is pretty boring, so in the event anything exciting like this ever happened I hope I'd have the sense to record it.

Don't go out of yer way looking for trouble. I've been hauled to the hospital and hauled people to the hospital. Don't care if I ever have to be hauled or haul someone ever again. It ain't purty in real life.

Stay in your bubble, keep your head down, don't make waves, speak when spoken to, don't raise your voice, watch your Ps & Qs, sit quietly until you are called, trim your hair, mind your manners, and most of all - Respect Authority.

I just threw up in my mouth some.

Before 9/11 and before iPhones, this looks like any big city common space after mental institutions were emptied and the mentally ill were turned out on the street.

Passerbys were annoyed but tended to ignore them. The police were burdened with having to 'take care' of so many mentally disturbed people but they didn't instigate situations where they demand compliance with some order, draw weapons and otherwise overreact.

Not having a clue as to what is actually going on here I'm sure none of the above applies but times have changed and police culture scares the living stuff out of me....which is why I will never be the guy taking this video. Nope.

Folks like Nick perform a valuable function of keeping the authorities honest. I can't fault the LEOs in this instance, though I thought the fellow with the firearm was escalating things rather dangerously. Oh well, to a hammer everything looks like a nail. Still, without folks like Nick LEOs and their familiars could run roughshod over the population. Even with guys like Nick they try, and I suspect often succeed.

Exactly.

Wonder if the dude will get a refund from Alaska Air for his missed flight? :D

Yes, it's take the safe way out vs. do the right but potentially unsafe thing. I commend Nick for doing something he felt might prevent an abuse of authority by LEOs, at some risk to his own butt.

Me too. We are a diminishing breed though. The rest of the country might as well be Soylent Green.

The man dropped. Almost immediately, a plain clothed man approached, showed his badge and pulled his gun (a real gun) and pointed it at the man's head.

You cant see from that video where the guy is pointing the gun. Its in a low ready which from YOUR perspective look to be directly at the guy, but from the user's perspective can be low and off target.

When the man got up and started to leave again, the plain clothes officer readied his gun, and I was certain I was going to watch a murder right in front of me.

Always have to be overly dramatic dontcha? Is EVERY police shooting a murder to you??

Thankfully, either the first officer hit him again with the Taser, or the man's legs were still not steady after the first tazing, because he dropped again and it was over. The man was cuffed and detained.

He tazed him again. Your legs aren't THAT unsteady after a tazing.

I wouldn't call it "backlash", just some critical thought and response. You have to expect a range of comments, and not all will be supportive. From what I've seen so far the main concern is for your safety.

Because, you know - an adult male, with modest IQ isn't suited to determining their own level of safety. We need a community or authority to do that for us.

I actually took the video in case something went wrong and the gentleman being arrested (or his family) needed some evidence of what happened.

Thankfully, it wasn't needed. Don't care about fsme, personally.

Wow, you really have a messed up mindset. Automatically you record in case those big bad cops doing something wrong to the poor innocent crazy looking guy.

Good on you, Nick. Gotta keep the po po honest.

As for the suspect... aside from having a strange grin and not genuflecting before TSA, what exactly did the suspect do to draw down wrath upon himself? The article says only that he was "not cooperating with TSA officers," which can mean anything from breaking out a grenade launcher to breaking wind in the screening line.

If the person that is shot is unarmed and/or not threatening the officer. Yes. I can't go around shooting people just because they don't listen to me. Neither should anyone else just because they wear a badge. We pay you to be held to a higher standard. So, show us you're better than us lowly civilians.

Someone has to, considering police are under no obligation to tell the truth.

I appreciate the sentiment. But let's not go too far. I just recorded something thst happened in front of me. I wasn't really in any risk. If you see the angle, I always kept something between the officers and me, and I never got close enough to be in danger myself.

The risk to my own butt was about on par with tripping over my own shoes because I was looking at my phone :)

I would guess that he was a little disappointed that the officers did what they are supposed to do and he didn't get to capture them doing evil deeds.

The one time the police ever do anything the right way and it's when he's recording.[SARCASM]

A recording here at home is the reason why the cop was charged with Assault from an arrest he made where he kicked the guy in the head. This one was recorded on a dashcam but still proves that recordings are useful at times.

Lies! Lies! They were all framed. Cops never do anything wrong. Nor do their co-workers. They should all be granted immediate sainthood by the pope. Don't believe me? Just ask them.

In all fairness, I have said nothing bad about police here. I think the gun was a bit overkill to a non armed and subdued individual, but they did this the way they should have. Multiple warnings, multiple attempts to get the man to resign, then used nonlethal force as option 1.

If all events went this way, I suspect the majority of the public would have a much different opinion. The cops were good.

Most are, in my experience. The problem is that the ones who are bad are really bad.

I will give you that you didn't outright say anything bad. However assuming that you were about to witness a murder, as well as your other posts it is very evident that you are not a fan of the police.

WOW - I just saw a photo of the guys face and you were right about the strange smile on his face. It reminded me of a movie bad guy who was about to blow up something.

are we not gonna focus on THIS guy?!?! Let's throw 20 seconds on the clock.....

He sure looks Tazed and Confused.
I'll bet he likes French fried pertaters, mmm hhmmm.
The plane aint got no gas in it mmm hhmmm.
Dammit, this is crazyglue, not chapstick!
Does Bose make a 'lunatic-cancelling' headset?

What's up with that stainless steel baseplate on the duty weapon in the holster? Or is that a taser on the guy's right side in the photo?

(Edit: In other words, what does LAPD carry that can even have a thick stainless baseplate on the magazine?)

(Double edit: I don't care what nutjobs do at LAX, nor if anyone films them.)

(Triple edit: Because, it's L.A. - of course stupid crazy crap is happening.)

just a poor quality image and overexposed on the light shining off the base plate.

Not all cops. Right now we are counting down the days until one of us here in my office is fired or forced to resign. We all did a happy dance the other day when they escorted her out of the office and took her gun away. We are hoping for criminal charges, but wer'e not sure it will happen.

The recording could also protect the police officer. If the citizen did something to provoke use of deadly force, that would help the officer justify his actions.

It's good to hear that your precinct is attempting to clean house, but there are way too many out there that pretend things never happened, or outright lie to cover up another badge. Of course if even one does that, it is way too many. I feel if any officer is found to be covering for another officer, both should be terminated with no pay, no severance, nothing. Not sure why there's such a mentality of covering up.

I don't disagree. It's worse when an officer commits a crime because they have sworn to uphold the law. They have not only committed the crime, but they have also violated their oath and destroyed the faith of the community in their law enforcement officers, which undermines the stability of our society.

The thinking is that these guys go to battle together, and they form a bond that they cover for each other no matter what. I get it. But it's detrimental to the community, and should be stamped out; not condoned.

Our main boss is still trying to protect her, but since it's out of his hands now, there isn't much he can do. We had to go above him to get this taken care of this time. I agree that there are too many bad cops.

All you cop haters, think what this country/state/town/ would be like with out them? Are you willing to leave your stuff at home unprotected while you work without any law? because with out enforcement, there is no law.

It gets pretty frustrating when you see this type of sh-t every day, IMHO this perp. should have been shot right away. Bang, problem solved, 10 days off with pay, I'm good with that.:)

Yes - because all or nothing is all we can have. Either have a bunch of crooked and murderous cops, or have anarchy. No in between.

I do now. What's your point? It's just stuff - all of which can be replaced. And would be after a call to the insurance company. And when I'm home, (and even when I'm not) I'm carrying. I don't need the police for anything.

Exactly. Police don't investigate non-violent crime anyway. Get your police report and file with the insurance co.

And like Ed, I carry where the law permits.
