Traded in our most expensive car ever on Saturday

I realize this is an odd topic, but I know we have a few car nuts on here. We traded in a 2014 Audi S8 with every available option and 3000 miles. It's the only car I think we've ever traded in that was worth over $100K. It was way outside my comfort zone. I was a nervous wreck until the Audi dealer picked it up today, all I could think of was somebody dinging it or the Audi guys thinking it was a different model and ours was worth much less!
I should have taken a picture, but it looked like a 4 door Batmobile.
Personally, I'd rather have a $115,000 airplane than a $115,000 car, but that's just me.

A while back I looked up in my rear view mirror and what did I see but a Bugatti Veyron! By my standards, I'd have to have a net worth of about $100 million before I'd consider something like that. I was a bit relieved when it passed my, any accident with a car of that value would probably bust my liability limit.

How'd you wind up trading a car you've had for such a short period of time anyway?

I'll buy most any Audi for $1,000 there's a high demand for parts .

My buddy is one of the biggest Audi enthusiast out there. He says "Audi ownership begins at your first check engine light"

Compared to a Honda Civic, they have their mechanical issues, and they don't get better with age. But it's all a matter of perspective. He probably spends 1/50th of what I spend on the Bonanza and his cost of entry was 1/20th. He loves messing with them.

Audi has some GREAT engineers. They're just not real interested in the long term maintenance aspect of car ownership.

Gosh golly, I had two of 'em, they were both real gems. Of course, it goes back a while, but the first was a 4000S, very economical and fun (for its time), had it to around 160k miles, sold for a sound price.

Then, bought a 100S (what they now call the A6), 1993, it was a tank - felt like it was carved from a single piece of granite. It gave its life that I might live when a kid in a full-size Bronco turned in front of me on a rain-slicked road. It had just under 100k miles, was solid as a rock. Wish I still had it.

Now, we've sorta migrated into BMWs (for wife), I like my eleven-year-old Suburban.

A new Ford truck of course! It's what all the cool kids drive!
It was actually a good looking car, black with grey wheels, oddly enough it had chrome mirrors which looked a little out of place.
Believe it or not, they weren't upside down, they owed $115K and that's what the Audi dealer paid for it. Our computer system wouldn't bill it out correctly, it wasn't configured for six digit selling prices.

My wife's been driving Audis for a number of years and seems to like them. Had an A6 and now an A4Quattro. Haven't had to do much more than change the oil. They seem like pretty solid cars to me. I'd buy another (but not an S8).

I hope that the Audi/VW reliability is better these days than their reputation. I just bought a Golf R. I made sure to get the CPO extended warranty though!

Yeah, they were $160-190K and now they are selling for $200-250K! Of course I didn't keep one.

Yeah, people don't understand that you can often have a top end car for free for a couple of years. I know a guy who gets a new Ferrari every other year, it doesn't cost him much.

They're probably fine until the warranty runs out. I've been debating on and off between an M5 or an XJR for a practical sedan. 10-15 years old for either.

I had a 1995 A6. Check Engine light should say "SELL!! SELL!! SELL!!!"

It's funny, I am not a car nut, I have no interest in high priced cars other than they are inventory and what do they cost vs selling price. My wife is the car nut in the family, I'm the boat and airplane nut.

I did some switchin up on my car/truck situation partly to free up some money for flying. I had a 2008 4x4 Pathfinder that I owned for about a year. Only car i've ever owed money on. Did everything I needed, towed well etc..

But I dumped it and paid off the loan plus bought a 1994 4x4 Suburban for towing and a 2004 Acura MDX for the daily driving. I have about 3k in each car/truck (bought each for much less than that). Both look and run great. High mileage and needed work when I bought them, but nothing I couldn't do in my driveway.

I was also getting sick of the newer Pathfinder because I was putting so many miles on it. I drive about 25k a year, putting that kind of miles on a financed car seemed really dumb. I'm much happier driving the high mileage Acura. I don't give a crap how many miles I put on it.

I'm fed up with big oil, the taxes, the dirty smelliness, the silliness of an engine that makes 75% heat instead of power or an engine that idles when I'm stuck in traffic. If that 911 Targa would have been all electric I would have put an order in tomorrow. So why not a Tesla? I love them, and you see them everywhere here, it's just too big a car for me. I street park a lot and big cars are a pain.

The sooner all these car makers go electric, the happier I will personally be. Might not be for everyone, or work for your commute, but I will not buy a pure fossil fuelled car ever again. Their time is up.

Not as pretty as the Porsche, but it's electric and will give the 911 a run if not beat it.

Porches have never done it for me for some reason, I don't know why. Actually I've never owned a German car, even though I've had various BMWs and Mercedes on my wish list. For now I'm happy with my 21 year old Turbo Sushi.

I bet! There are tons of clips online of the Tesla Model S smoking BMW M5's and Mercedes E63's etc. It's kind of fun to watch. I went to the BMW forum after the M5 got beaten and they were just in total shock and denial, making up a million excuses.

One of my friends had an M5. He traded in his M-Roadster for it. I kept and still have my M-Roadster. He was really amazed that the M-Roadster could beat the M5 off of the line, even though he used the launch mode. It could not maintain that lead on the track. But he thought it would kill from the first millisecond.

I haven't done the power to weight measurement of the two cars. But I would not be surprised that was the reason. After moving it was just then pure hp, which the M5 had plenty to spare got it out in front.

I just sold my 1995 Audi S6. 278k on the odometer and I daily drove it for the last nine years. Original engine, turbo, and transmission. All four heated seats worked and so did the air conditioning. It was and is a great car, stickered for $50k back in '95. I replaced it with a new Audi.
